Just a recommendation for a 7 part streaming NETFLIX series called "Godless". It's a western but a truly refreshing one you won't forget. It stars Jeff Daniels (the "baddie"), Jack O'Connell (the "hero") and Michelle Suzanne Dockery (from "Downton Abbey") (the "girl"). I think Daniels deserves an Emmy for his performance

Carlos Rafael Rivera is the score composer for the film. I found the music understated only because I remain entrenched in the Bernstein/Newman western vein and missed expected fireworks.

I second the recommendation... I'm five episodes in and it's a nice change of pace mini-series show. The music is definitely understated with a lot of acoustic guitar with a small orchestral string section backing it up. But the show has a quiet, pastoral feel between the bursts of violence.

However there was one cue for a montage in the fourth episode (I believe) that was very Horner-like in its chord progression. In fact, it very much sounded like they temp tracked the "learning to be a Navi" cue from Avatar and the composer of the show just went with a very similar sound.

That was the beginning of the fifth episode. The clearest temp track lift in the show, but it actually turns out fairly different from the Horner (though it was clearly the point of departure).

This is a fantastic series which I highly recommend. Great characters, great realism, involving story. The music in context at least is excellent and personally I would happily buy an album.

IMO, Carlos Rafael Rivera's score for GODLESS is the finest film scoring I've heard this year. I am salivating for a soundtrack release and every episode had me marveling at the understated power of the score. The music reminds me of a pair of excellent western scores, ALL THE PRETTY HORSES (by Larry Paxton, Marty Stuart and Kristin Wilkinson) and Carter Burwell's THE HI-LO COUNTRY (which could definitely benefit from an expanded release). Highest recommendation for the miniseries itself.

Watched the first one last night after the recommendations here and was impressed.

Now, don't anyone jump on me for this because it may be that I simply haven't seen many of the last few westerns, but quite a bit of it reminded me of....The Lone Ranger. Maybe it was the use of widescreen in the style passed down from the spaghettis, not to mention the stuff with the railroad (that too being a major feature of Once Upon A The in the West), or perhaps the adult tone which many thought to be out of place with the Disney film. But don't forget I'm one of those few that loved TLR..

Will certainly watch it all. Fills a nice gap waiting for a whole bunch of spaghetti Blu-rays I decided to round up sitting under the Christmas tree soon..

I too am watching this series here in the UK. For a television series I was also curious about the music and am watching the programme for its visuals and story as well as the music.

The narrative is very good and Daniels plays his part with relish.

One thing that does strike me is whether the hair styles for both men and women are accurate? I thought that women mostly wore their hair tight to the head on farms (as opposed to saloon girls and women) and men wore their hair long and were mostly bearded or moustached. It is something that distracts me when watching westerns. Am I wrong in this?

Sounds good and will have to check it out.

Btw, I first dropped by here because I wondered if the topic was about a very cool Danzig song named "Godless".

Those rave comments are richly deserved and it made me so happy to see how much the composer was touched by the praise. Really hope this gets a release soon. I'm greedily hoping against hope that it can be a two disc set, because there are so many highlights of this score for a 7 hour western classic.

Pretty good. Somewhat depressing considering the many fatalities.

But whats with the widescreen ratios NETFLIX (MARCO POLO was wide also) ?
If i want widescreen i will go to IMAX!

Great show! A little slow (to me) for the first few episodes, but i got really into it!

And the score is great! specially the last 2-3 episodes! Can't believe there's still no soundtrack for it already.
Seems like even the composer doesn't know if it'll get released. Which can only mean it will take a while IF it eventually gets released? Would be a shame if it wasnt!

Just finished this tonight. Wow that finale was intense and the music in the last episode was really good. I hope this gets released at some point considering it is the best soundtrack for a Netflix original I've heard. Really powerful stuff.

If this ever gets a release I hope it's a two disc set. The complete scores to the last two episodes deserve a disc all on their own, like LOST season 3. I think my favorite score is for the penultimate episode, actually -- the way it culminates in the theme for the townspeople as we witness their last fateful day with their husbands in flashback was the most incredible musical moment of the entire series. Then the highlights from the first five episodes should be able to fit on the first disc.

I concur with all of the praise for this show, one of Netflix's best by far and the score very good too. I was on pins and needles come the finale, worried which characters may not make it. Wonderfully acted and executed all around.
