I'm moving to LA and bringing the family with me.
Trying to come up with a good Playlist of music that evokes the city.

During a visit last year I had LLL's 2016 Beverly Hills Cop release playing while I got (intentially) lost driving around at night. It was one of the more perfect nights of my life.

I've started a list but definitely interested in others thoughts.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Try these:

Sunset Boulevard (Waxman)
Drive (Martinez)
Nightcrawler, Collateral and Falling Down (all three by Newton Howard)
Less Than Zero (Newman)

When I moved to LA I was struck by the distinctive Latino (particularly Mexican) cultural influence which pervades the city. Movies and TV seem to intentionally play this down (in lieu of the image of Porsches in Beverly Hills and suntanned blondes playing volleyball in Santa Monica) but the dominant culture of LA county is Latino.

So, for me, these are the scores that evoke Southern California...

The Milagro Beanfield War
A Walk in the Clouds
The Magnificent Seven
Extreme Prejudice
Raggedy Man
Under Fire
The Mask of Zorro

If you're a Kritzerland fan, can't recommend this highly enough:

We'll make you hardboiled yet, Tom Maguire! How do you look in a rumpled suit and snap-brim fedora?

Mulholland Falls (Dave Grusin)

Farewell, My Lovely (David Shire)

True Confessions (Georges Delerue)

How's the smog in L.A. these days? I base my weather reports on episodes of Starsky and Hutch...and based on that, it looks BAD.

L.A.? A few scores come to mind right away:

Jerry Goldsmith: CHINATOWN
Jerry Goldsmith: L.A. CONFIDENTIAL

Jon Brion/Aimee Mann: MAGNOLIA
James Newton Howard: GRAND CANYON

and last, but by no means least:

John Williams: EARTHQUAKE

And for the nights, I recommend Collateral. The *soundtrack*, not JNH's score. The Seed, Destino D'Abril, Audioslave are a necessity.

I'm uncertain as to whether many here acknowledge "soundtracks", which is why I went back and deleted my Ambient music suggestion from my previous post. If "To-Mag" gives us the nod, then I'll put the soundtrack of "City of Industry" back up. wink

Oh, what the hell.
