THE LONELY GUY

For the 1984 Universal Studios film The Lonely Guy, composer Jerry Goldsmith composed a lighthearted score, dominated by a sweet love theme. The theme is first featured over the film's opening credits in the form of a vocal ("Love Comes Without Warning) performed by America — a melody that begins with a melancholy, seven-note phrase and variations before turning into a rhythmic, pop-flavored song.Goldsmith wrote a number of treatments of this theme for keyboard and solo piano, giving the score a unified feel that centers around Steve Martin’s character. As is evident from the numerous alternates on this CD, the film was a challenging, perhaps even grueling assignment, with the composer forced to record numerous approaches to several cues, often making changes and revisions on the recording stage during sessions.
Previously released only on an MCA LP back at the time of the film's release, it was a mini-LP, featuring four vocals and two of Goldsmith's score cuts. With the generous cooperation of Universal Music Group and Universal Studios, Intrada accessed all of the stereo music elements from 1/4?, 1/2? and 2? 24-track elements to put a comprehensive album together featuring Goldsmith's charming, wistful, and playful score. It's infectious and good-natured, and perhaps the last Jerry Goldsmith LP to find its way onto CD.
The Lonely Guy was based on The Lonely Guy’s Book of Life, a non-fiction book by Bruce Jay Friedman. The late Neil Simon spun off a screenplay loosely based on Friedman’s ideas, following lonely guy Larry Hubbard (Steve Martin) in New York City, where “Lonely Guy” is an established class of persons and where Hubbard commiserates with other Lonely Guys such as milquetoast Warren Evans (Charles Grodin). He also endures excruciating bad fortune with women such as his ex-girlfriend Danielle (Robin Douglas) and Iris (Judith Ivey), ex-wife of another Lonely Guy—who apparently hasn’t had sex despite six previous marriages.

Technically, Goldsmith's re-recording of his score for THE SWARM on a Warner Bros. LP has not been on CD, even though the original tracks have been released.
While not first-tier Goldsmith, it's nice to have THE LONELY GUY at last.
The Swarm LP is not a re-recording. It's the original film soundtrack.

I always thought there was a difference between my LP and the PROMETHEUS release, performance-wise. Nope. Just a mastering difference.
The "mastering difference" on THE SWARM CD seems to have resulted in timing differences from the LP of a half minute or more on some tracks. That's led to the belief that the recordings/takes are different. Only 3 of the 10 tracks on the LP match up to the CD with respect to title and timing. Has anyone traced the other 7 tracks on the LP as to where they appear on the Prometheus CD?

Back on topic... "Lonely Guy" is a wonderful release!
I couldn't care less for the songs, but to have a never before available Goldsmith score in complete form on a pristine new CD is like a dream come true.

Agreed 100%, and it was also the very last significantly-unreleased Goldsmith score from the 80s! (Only two short score cues on that 18 minute mini LP.) The only other thing I can think of that doesn't have a substantial portion out there is his very first rejected score that we know of (Wall Street), which wasn't recorded and if I understand correctly, wasn't even ever finished being written. (Who knows how many actual cues Jerry composed, besides the theme?)

The tracks on the LP were heavily cut/edited. Especially the "Main Title". It's the same recording. This was discussed for years. Here is a thread from many years ago.

decided to clean the dust from my LP to compare it to the complete/CD version and indeed the LP includes a lot of editing, but it is possible to recreate the LP version with the CD and an audio editor (I use GoldWave), here are the sections used in the LP - with the possibility that I may not have identified all of the minor edits, but this can help those who do not have the LP and are curious about its program:
The Swarm (LP edit):
1) Main Title (the "Main Title" in the LP is a merger of two tracks, the first 1'20" of the "CD T01 - Main Title" and "CD T02 - The Black Mass". In case you want to replicate exactly the LP you also need to do a micro-edit in the start of the Main Title, ommiting a 5 second section (from 0'26 to 0'31).
Therefore the LP Main Title is: Main Title 0,00'-0'26"/0'30"-1'20"+The Black Mass (complete)
2) "A Gift of Flowers" is the same (CD T13)
3) "The Bees Picnic" is the same (CD T04)
4) "Tommy's Death" is the track "Tommy's Dead" (CD T20) + "Rita And The Doctor" (CD T16) - merge Rita And The Doctor at 3'17" of Tommy's Dead.
5) "The Bees Arrive" is the first 1'09" of "Bees On Fire" (CD T11) + "'The Bees Arrive" (CD T14)
6) "Bees Inside" is the first 4'45" of "The Bees Inside" (CD T26) + the finale of "Red Two Reporting" from 5'04" (CD T01)
7) "Don't Take Him" is the last 2'32" of "High Toxin" - from 1'55" (CD T08)
8) "Exact Instructions" is the last 4'36" of "Exact Instructions" - from 2'39" (CD T21)
9) "A Boy's Story" is the track "Out Of The Closet" (CD T15)
10) "End Title" is the same (CD T27)

Yeah, I can't understand this! The Lonely Guy is a WONDERFUL score! It's not a masterpiece, but it's just a fun, pleasant score that definitely deserved a release! I can not WAIT to get it! Oh, and for the "Negative Nellies" who can't stand the song, I LOVE it! America did a splendid job with it(It's A LOT better than A Horse With No Name!  )!
