Dragon’s Domain Records, to be distributed through buysoundtrax.com, presents the world premiere compact disc release of GRIZZLY, featuring music composed by Robert O. Ragland (10 TO MIDNIGHT, Q, THE WINGED SERPENT, ASSASSINATION) for the 1976 horror thriller directed by William Girdler, written by Harry Flaxman and David Sheldon, starring Christopher George, Andrew Prine, Richard Jaeckel , Joe Dorsey and Teddy the bear as the Grizzly.

GRIZZLY is a tale of realistic terror about the largest ground beast in the world, an eighteen foot, two thousand pound grizzly bear that goes on a massive killing spree in the serene setting of a national park. Park Ranger Micheal Kelly (George) and wildlife specialist Arthur Scott (Jaeckel) combine their efforts to fight two enemies: the bloodthirsty bear and park supervisor Charley Kittredge (Dorsey) who wants to keep the park open despite the inherent danger.

Unable to stop the bear using any conventional methods, Kelly employs the talents of helicopter pilot Don Stober (Prine), a Vietnam veteran. Kelly and Stober take to the skies with high powered rifles and a rocket launcher. Meanwhile, Scott loses his life trying to take the bear alive with a powerful tranquilizer. Can Stober and Kelly stop the bear before it kills again?

Playing the piano at the age of five set the tone for Robert O. Ragland’s lifelong interest in music. Throughout his school years, he performed and organized dance bands. After graduation from Northwestern University, Ragland served as an arranger for the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra. Later, he attained degrees in music from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago and attended the Academy of Music in Vienna. Following the death of Tommy Dorsey, Ragland officially left the music business for his stint in advertising. But the urge to write film music overwhelmed him so he came to California.

Some of Robert O. Ragland’s diverse credits include RETURN TO MACON COUNTY, PONY EXPRESS RIDER, SHARK’S TREASURE, PROJECT: KILL, ABBY, MANSION OF DOOM, JAGUAR LIVES, Q, THE WINGED SERPENT, MESSENGER OF DEATH, 10 TO MIDNIGHT, THE FEAR, ORION’S KEY, TOP OF THE WORLD and MOTEL BLUE. Ragland passed away in 2012 at the age of 80. In his later years, Ragland also conducted the music for many live awards shows including the Oscars and the Emmys.

Dragon’s Domain Records is excited to bring GRIZZLY to compact disc for the first time, featuring music composed and conducted by Robert O. Ragland, featuring orchestrations by Jack Hayes, performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of London. GRIZZLY is a limited edition release of 500 units. Suggested retail price is $16.95. GRIZZLY is expected to begin shipping the week of September 24th, 2018.

Woah! Cool beans! I'll pick this up later. This one's a minor fav of mine as far as beastly music goes.

That's not how you hold a bazooka, Chris, and I'm not sure it's cricket to hunt bear with one. wink

First Q THE WINGED SERPENT and now GRIZZLY. Gala time for Ragland fans. I'm pretty sure this is someone's avatar here.

Robert O. Ragland is a very overlooked composer, we're looking into other titles of his.

We hope you enjoy this release.

Ford, it's gotta be said that you're really killin' it with these Dragon's Domian releases (as the hip kids say these days). Looking forward to picking this up!

Question for Ragland enthusiasts: Did he ever do any other big orchestral scores along these lines, aside from Q: THE WINGED SERPENT of course? The few other things I know of by him all tend to be more 'of the era' (i.e. funk type stuff that isn't really my cuppa tea).

Love the main theme and the artwork for this release is gorgeous. Also can't beat the price either.

Thank you, thank you !!

Ordered ! Wow, I remember seeing this so bad it's kinda good movie several times in the theater. It is a carbon copy of Jaws, but the cast makes up for it, especially Andrew Prine smile And that music...I loved it and remember sneaking in a cassette tape recorder in one day to record the main titles razz

Sweet! This is the type of stuff that really stokes my campfire. I've never even seen GRIZZLY, but I'm a sucker for horror soundtracks from the '70s and '80s and I love Ragland's scores for Q ~ THE WINGED SERPENT and 10 TO MIDNIGHT, so I'm really looking forward to hearing this.

I mainly remember this movie for showing a little kid get ripped to pieces on-screen. I'm guessing they were trying to top Alex Kitner's death in Jaws, but it's a worthy HOLY SHIT moment anyhow.

I have vague memories of the film. I remember it being extremely violent.

I’m enjoying my instant download after purchasing the CD right now. With only 500 released I waisted no time purchasing as soon as I got the email. Not that I would have waited any longer if there were 5000. Love those horror scores! Nice release Dragon’s Domain!! Always a cool movie to watch, and now a great CD to spin.
