SEASON 1:

These are all the episodes of the first season that have a composer credited.

The catchy theme music is by Jerry Goldsmith.

EDIT:
November 24, 2020: Many videos have new links or will have new links soon. New videos may be edited down and therefore the time stamps for highlights I gave will not link up with the video. You can figure it out.

"Requiem for a Son"
By: Jerry Goldsmith
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lojottRtRMc (NEW link as of November 24, 2020)

This is Goldsmith's only effort for the series.

Highlights:
  • 0:50 in.
  • 4:15 in.
  • 7:26 in. It's like an alternate version of the opening credits.
  • 19:07 in.
  • 21:24 in.
  • 25:00 in. And after the commercial break.
  • 34:27 in.
  • 38:11 in.
  • 42:47 in.
  • 4804 in.
  • 49:41 in.

    ****.5

    That's nearly every single cue.
A fine orchestral score with an edge and a good dose of jazz styling.

    "To Catch a Dead Man"
    By: Jeff Alexander
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzlh7UxBPDI

This is Alexander's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 1:50 in.
  • 4:57 in.
  • 13:14 in.
  • 14:51 in.
  • 19:43 in.
  • 24:18 in.
  • 29:11 in.
  • 45:02 in.
  • 49:17 in.
  • 51:06 in.

Guest starring a less-than-wooden William Shatner, who I bet only took the role so he could hang out a nice house, on a lake, with an attractive brunette. Gotta be why he's more natural here.

Another fine score, but it doesn't have the edge and quite the bite of jazz that Goldsmith's score had.

    "The Murdering Class"
    By: Duane Tatro
    Score suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wa7AeoD8AE
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6mfm2k
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtfRhKSaMBw (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 5:27 in.
  • 16:40 in.
  • 21:01 in.
  • 24:20/25:32 in.
  • 36:16 in.
  • 41:03 in.
  • 50:12 in.

The two cues before the final one, are particular favorites. Most of the score was more in the mystery realm.

    "Murder-Go-Round"
    By: Duane Tatro
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XWGi2__cHk (NEW link as of 2-20-2021)

    Highlights:
  • 3:19 in.
  • 5:54 in.
  • 13:14 in.
  • 18:34/20:39 in.
  • 23:50/25:25 in.
  • 33:23 in.
  • 39:45 in.
  • 43:39 in.

Guest starring Claude Akins. He sure got around on TV series. Many "Actors" of today could sure learn some lessons from his acting.

Random Claude Akins Character: "Greed got into this, filthy gut greed!"

    SEASON 2:

If I don't mention an episode, it means there was no credited composer.

    "Blind Terror"
    By: Billy Byers
    Score suite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mggwyYAz0Iw
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6mfm2h
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB7bIxDD6Vg (NEW)

This is Byers' only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:55 in.
  • 9:53 in.
  • 12:27 in.
  • 27:58 in.
  • 34:28 in.
  • 38:38 in.
  • 40:17 in.
  • 44:00 in.

He did a good job. Byers' IMDb credits are short. Maybe he as difficult to work with or only took scoring jobs for money now and then.

    That's it for today.

For some reason I thought Jerry had scored more than just the pilot, but maybe I’m confusing this with The Waltons from around the same time when I know he did a bunch. It’s a damn good score though, and a soundtrack album should definitely be produced for this series, whether it’s a multi disc set or even just a single CD.

Jerry's personal thoughts about Barnaby Jones are... instructive (in other words he thought it was a POS. wink ) It's always to his great credit as a pure musician that he could pull off interesting work for shows he knew were garbage.

The pilot, what I saw, was mediocre and the actor playing Barnaby wasn't that greatest, but it certainly wasn't bad. Even a little Columbo in the writing and character.

Yavar, you might be thinking about "Police Story", where Jerry is credited for a number of episodes (though speculation is he didn't do all of them)

    Finishing SEASON 2:

    "Death Leap"
    By: Tom Scott
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6nactc (video quality is sub par, but it's the music that counts)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VmFMQ4BvyE (NEW)

This is Scott's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:55 in. It's a long cue (with a brief lull in the middle), running almost five minutes in length.
  • 12:54 in. Technically, I'm joining a cue in progress, but this is the point where it gets cool.
  • 14:24 in.
  • 33:04 in.
  • 40:30 in. And the short intro cue after the commercial break.
  • 46:05 in.
  • 48:28 in.

More jazz oriented than Jerry, but without that biting edge. I could have stood to hear more episode scores by him, but I guess he was busy on other shows (Assuming he would have come back).

There are a lot of things I miss about the 1980's, but smoking in businesses and restaurants is not one of them.

Barnaby: Can I keep this police evidence for an hour, breaking the chain of custody and tempering with evidence for a trial?
    Police Captain: Sure!

    "Echo of a Murder"
    By: Hugo Friedhofer
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DnMOarrQ2s (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 2:19 in.
  • 6:29 in.
  • About 10:30 in.
  • 18:48 in.
  • 22:07 in.
  • 27:46 in.
  • 29:27 in.
  • 37:48 in.
  • 43:17 in.
  • 44:34 in.

Guest starring Hawkeye's former tent mate.
The original Atkins diet -- where you can lose about as much weight as, say, your wife!

Barnaby: "You know, ma'am, I wasn't too old when my grandfather took me to see a young fellow named Harry Houdini, who was appearing in our town. And at an early age I learned two things: One -- you can't eat a hotdog and cotton candy at the same time; and two -- believing everything you see is nearly as bad as having to see everything you believe."

    "Divorce - Murderer's Style"
    By: Jon Parker
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgv9-BAUyfg (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 3:37 in.
  • 13:04 in. Those first about ten seconds would have made a nice opening toa TV series theme.
  • 24:39 in.
  • 31:12 in.
  • 43:23 in.
  • 45:18 in.
  • 49:00 in.

Even though Parker is a favorite TV composer of mine (he didn't one of my favorite scores to an episode of a TV series: "Chato" from "Gunsmoke"), this is the first episode score of the series which is not as good as the others (over all).

    "The Killing Defense"
    By: John Elizalde
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6pomkv
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r51YcnEpp88 (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 1:44 in.
  • 11:39 in.
  • 15:00 in.
  • 18:17 in.
  • 19:59 in.
  • 27:10 in.
  • 31:04 in.
  • 41:20 in.
  • 43:09 in.
  • 44:09 in.

Guest starring Mr. Naked Gun himself, Leslie Neilsen.

Moving on to season three now.

    SEASON 3:

    "A Gathering of Thieves"
    By: Artie Kane
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6mlxer
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRfz0d7dLJs (NEW)

This is Kane's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 5:00 in.
  • 23:11 in.
  • 33:11 in.
  • 34:44 in.
  • 40:30 in.

I'm glad Kane didn't do another. His grasp on the jazz stylings he used isn't that great and the weird inclusion of synths here and there when he had real players, cheapens some small parts of cues. Especially with how cheesy they sounded.

Guest starring Mary Beth Lacey (that's a lead character from "Cagney & Lacey").

Is this just a bad load or a badly edited episode?

    "Dead Man's Run"
    By: Richard Markowitz
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6r8yfb

    Highlights:
  • 3:06 in.
  • 20:43 in.
  • 21:27 in.
  • 24:05 in.
  • 39:02 in.
  • 44:45 in.

Markowitz's score uses some light simple jazz touches and concentrates more on the standard orchestra section.

    That's it for today.
Tomorrow: a returning name, and new composers (including Nelson Riddle).

    Finishing SEASON 3:

    "The Challenge"
    By: Michel Mention
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6ocm16
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYQf5z-_VVU (NEW)

This is Mention's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 4:44 in.
  • 11:28 in.
  • 14:55 in.
  • 17:55 in.
  • 20:00 in.
  • 2345 in.
  • 29:27 in.
  • 35:06 in.
  • 39:37 in.
  • 41:48 in.

    A good solid score.
A good deal of dissonant material here. Kind of reminds me of Goldsmith in "Freud" mode. There is some jazz work, too. I liked the score -- wish he had done more for the series. The way he fit the saxophones into the climax cue around the end worked really well.

    "Forfeit by Death"
    By: Willard Wood Jones
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6mpthm
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zpulmOjNhg (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 4:54 in.
  • 7:16 in.
  • 25:10 in.
  • 24:30 in.
  • 41:30 in.

    "Blueprint for a Caper"
    By: Nelson Riddle
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6r8ydx
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxNy0qs_vm0 (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 0:44 in.
  • 3:17 in.
  • 18:56 in.
  • 33:10 in.
  • 37:40 in.
  • 4115 in.
  • 44:01 in.

Finally, a Riddle score that didn't make me think of "Batman".

    "Time to Kill"
    By: John Elizalde
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6mszf3
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYmUgBYiUrs (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 1:56 in.
  • 4:17 in.
  • 7:55 in.
  • 15:25 in.
  • 17:01 in.
  • 20:25 in.

    SEASON 4:

    "The Price of Terror"
    By: Laurence Rosenthal
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6ndcbs

This is Rosenthal's only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 0:450 in.
  • 4:42 in.
  • 6:44 in.
  • 2950 in.
  • 35:00 in.
  • 36:30 in.
  • 41:12 in.
  • 44:12 in.

It's not that his score was bad, I just think Michel Mention would have given this the

dissonant edge that the scenes needed. Particularly the 6:44 example; too groovy and not

dramatic for what was going on.

    "Honeymoon with Death"
    By: Duane Tatro
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6rrdj9

    Highlights:
  • 3:12 in.
  • 610 in.
  • 7:48 in.
  • 10:13 in.
  • 12:50 in.
  • 16:54 in.
  • 18:30 in.
  • 22:13/23:24 in.

    By: John Elizalde
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6rtjpl
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGFWXhKrzsQ (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 0:50/1:28/4:05* in.
  • 9:07 in.
  • 11:22 in.
  • 14:23 in.
  • 18:57 in.
  • 19:55 in.
  • 23:31 in.
  • 32:37/34:53 in. And after the commercial break (in sections during the whole missile testing sequence).

    "Double Vengeance"
    By: Nelson Riddle
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6ndcbn
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqidhbsAxDk (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 2:10 in.
  • 22:20 in.
  • 23:50 in.
  • 37:10 in.
  • 40:28 in.
  • 45:30 in.

    By: Mauro Bruno
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6rwynv
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxsjr3uYPug (NEW)

    Highlights:
  • 0:50 in.
  • 2:35 in.
  • 16:03 in.
  • 22:12 in.
  • 28:44 in.
  • 32:57 in.
  • 33:12 in.
  • 42:38 in.

    "Blood Relations"
    By: Willard Wood Jones
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6rtjp2
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBMVrkzxcgY (NEW)

This is Jones' final effort for the series. His IMDb credits are so short, these two episodes are probably 40% of everything he's done.

    Highlights:
  • 22:28 in.
  • 23:53 in.
  • 28:32 in.
  • 30:04 in.
  • 36:28 in.
  • 38:43 in.
  • 40:35 in.

    By: Duane Tatro

    "Deadline for Dying"
    By: George Romanis
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6sdkof

This is Romanis' only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 2:25 in.
  • 4:20 in.
  • 38:34 in.
  • 43:41 in.

Sounds like the Goldsmith theme has been re-recorded.

    "Sins of Thy Father"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6tkhft

    Highlights:
  • 3:52 in. A long cue, goes on for over five minutes.
  • 11:40 in.
  • 21:32 in.
  • 29:35 in.
  • 37:40 in. Another cool cue that could serve as a laid-back 1970's crime show theme.
  • 42:40 in.

    "Sister of Death"
    By: John Peter Smalley

    Highlights:
  • 3:15 in.
  • 6:05 in.
  • 25:08 in.
  • 34:45 in.

Smalley's scoring career was very brief.
A search outside his IMDb resume, indicates he also orchestrated for Basil Poleudoris (as well as Steven Scott Smalley). I don't know if he's alive or if there are missing credits. I should probably contact one of the Smalley's (I have an e-mail somewhere).

I remember watching the pilot,. Didn't it co-star William Conrad as Frank Cannon? Those "Quinn Marin Productions" filled my early years. AND!, the theme is one of the first things I recorded on cassette tape from tv as a fledgling soundtrack fan. I did quite a lot of tv themes..
