This is tragic. One of the finest composers of the 20th Century. He may not have appealed to the more Symphonic minded film music fans, but boy, could he write some wonderful music. I have too many favourites, and everyone has their own anyway, but I'LL NEVER FORGET WHAT'S 'IS NAME must rank as one of his finest, as well as of course LOVE STORY, HELLO-GOODBYE nice score, HANNIBAL BROOKS and INTERNATIONAL VELVET. Not forgetting all the superb scores for Claude Lelouch .

So long Maestro - never to be forgotten

Sad news indeed. Lai's death has received substantial attention in the French press: https://www.google.ie/search?q=Francis+Lai&source=lnms&tbm=nws&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjKzYeMkcPeAhXMDsAKHYpkBjwQ_AUIESgE&biw=1600&bih=758

RIP Mr Lai.

Question: Did he ever work in Hollywood?

So sad, RIP dear Francis Lai

Just how I feel. He wrote “A Man and a Woman” which is like the French “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. Underrated hereabouts.

Well, there is his Oscar winner, Love Story.

R.I.P. I am not so familiar with his work outside of a few scores, but he composed one of film music's finest ever tracks - Today It's You from A Man and a Woman.

About a week ago I went searching through my video library for 'something old', something I hadn't viewed in a while. I selected my dvd copy of 'Toute une Vie', ('And Now, My Love'), which I hadn't seen in maybe 15 years. This Claude Lelouche film was Oscar nominated in (I think), 1974, and it has one of my favorite Francis Lai scores attached to it. It was a surprise to see Francis Lai IN the actual film, portraying a music conductor in a dance hall. Mr. Lai's music was unlike anyone else's, a unique talent who will be missed!

"Where do I begin...."

You and Claude Lelouch put cinema on a new track and made the 60s stand out.

Thank you for all that music!

Such sad news. He was one of the few remaining legends of his generation. I met him a few years ago, in Ghent.

One of those film composers that seemed to have an endless supply of great tunes. My two favourites, Hello-Goodbye (1970) & I'll Never Forget What's 'is Name (1967).

Hi Dave, I actually saw Toute une Vie (1974) in Paris during the first week of it's release in 1974! I was with two friends from Ireland on holiday and we all loved the film and especially the music! It is still my favourite Francis Lai score and how sad that it has never been released properly i.e. without the dialogue! I bought the 2 LP Original Soundtrack release in a record store in Paris but afterwards gave it to my friend and his wife as a gift because we all cherished the memory of our visit so dearly. We also went to see Last Tango in Paris (1972) in a rep cinema that same week! Great memories indeed!

Man this is tragic, awfully gutted. frown

Francis was another French genius like FDR although an opposed compound, similar to maestro GD roots. FL was a renowned instrumentalist his bold timbres were art-nouveau music for romantic dramas & erotica, I love FL passionate style its adventurous yet intimate fine musicality. Sins, Emmanuelle II, Bilitis, Love Story, AMAAW, IV. fabulous pieces.

Big respect Music-Box & Quartet too the resurgence of Lai's work I snagged them all may long it continues, thank you.

R.I.P. Francis Lai. Great melody maker. Thank you very much.

Love his score for HOUSE OF CARDS, which is part of that recent Universal set (which seems to have gone OOP).
