Where did John Barry record original music of Raise the Titanic in 1980 for the movie ? and which orchestra ?

I don't know exactly where, but it was almost certainly an orchestra of session musicians rather than a well known orchestra like the London Symphony.

Cheers

When I was at Silva, I seem to remember being told that the master tapes don't exist anymore.

If only they would remake the film... correctly.

When Silva searched for the tapes they found only a music and effects track. No pure music tracks were found. OK, that M&E track could have been used to lift the overture, title and floodlight waltz (which is a music only scene) but that would be all.

That's not quite the same as saying the tapes don't exist (absence of evidence isn't the same as evidence of absence) but it means if they exist, they're somewhere obscure and no one's likely to find them by anything other than a happy accident. (as happened with Damien Omen II).

Thanks for the clarification. I'm aware it was in the US, I was merely making the point it wouldn't have been a "named" orchestra.

While we're wondering who has the original tapes, I wonder what happened to that incredible 55 foot miniature of the Titanic that was used for the "raised" scenes. Maybe it was destroyed, for the simple reason that storing it cost a fortune.

I'll add my endorsement to the RTT re-recording.

NP: THE AVENGERS (Laurie Johnson, London Studio Orchestra).

Well that answers that question, thanks. I wish they had thrown a plastic tarp over the model to keep off the wind and rain.

A better solution would have been to send the model to a shopping mall, where it could have been displayed indoors without deterioration.

It worked for the 1953 model:

"... there was a limited vinyl pressing of a soundtrack released in Japan only to be played in theaters between screenings. It was supposed to the the template for a legit release but Barry, sensing the film was going to flop killed it. There were several hundred copies made from what I understand much like the theater only release of "Robin and Marion" which was widely distributed in the States some years before "Titanic". " read on another forum...

is it true ???

Laurent, there's a lot of bullcrap spoken on forums and a lot of misinformation.

If ... if ... there was a limited edition vinyl of the Raise The Titanic score in Japan, then not one single John Barry collector I know knows about it. Not one. Not even the lonest-serving, most search-high-and-low collectors. And that includes collectors I know in Japan.

It's like the "collector" who insisted there was a bootleg of the original Mister Moses. When I said, "persuade me", he sent me a sample. It was the Nic Raine recording. But somebody was passing it off as the original on forums and happy idiots were buying it from him.

Of course, this doesn't 'prove' this person is wrong, but if it exists, let somebody produce one, or at least provide some documentary trail that's better than a fan on a forum.

The other thing that happens is people remember something but don't get it right.

There was a 45rpm single issued in Japan with a re-recording of the film's overture. This person may be misremembering that as "there was a vinyl issued". But it was only one theme and it was a rerecording not the original.

You can find that single on Youtube easily enough.

Cheers

And didn't someone say on here recently that the re-recording on the Japanese 45 single was not even conducted by Barry, but by someone else?

Conducted by Chris Carpenter?
He did a handful, I believe, of 'rare' score covers - nice take on AUDREY ROSE
by Michael Small that I actually prefer, wish I had a better version than a crunchy
dub of the 45.

This is my favorite Barry score hands down. The rerecording is great but would faint if the sessions were uncovered. If the Titanic can be found I am sure one day one of the labels will surprise us all.
