So...take all our bronzed PDOs...send them in a box (no cases, no inserts) and she will replace them if they are received by end of November?

Hah, 20 years?? Is she serious? The CD format itself is only about 23 years old and the bad PDO discs were made 1988-1993. Then the bronzing problem didn't show up until years later.

PDO is Philips & Du Pont Optical UK Ltd, dba "A Bunch of Stupid F---s."

Yes they may be. Look particularly for titles on the JOS (John Scott) label and also Unicorn (e.g. Bernard Herrmann's Psycho and Wuthering Heights).

PDO was responsible for pressing up some titles from JOS Records, Unicorn Kachana and some Silva titles. These were titles from several years back... If you have one of these titles, it will say on the disc that it was manufactured by PDO. I had mine replaced like 7 years ago... If you have some JOS Records titles, you might want to try e-mailing JOS about it.

That's right, I think the original pressings of Silva's ALIEN and DAMIEN: OMEN II were bronzing victims.

Would be nice to see a list of all the soundtracks possibly affected, though I imagine if any CDs I own are it'd be on the classical side...

I'm looking at my copy of Alien. I believe it is the orig. pressing, but at the bottom it says "Manufactured In England", nothing about PDO. Perhaps this is a repressing? The label is SilvaScreen FilmCD 003

It would be nice to have a full list of soundtracks possibly affected.

This problem is at least 7 years old now and if PDO is not replacing these discs any more, a lot of people are going to be SOL. I know that JOS has generously replaced discs in the past so I would advise looking at early JOS titles in your collection to see if any of the discs are visibly bronzing. As far as non-JOS titles that came from labels like Unicorn-Kanchana and Silva, those titles are probably not in print any more so I would be surprised if they could be replaced by anyone other than PDO. Check your early Silva and Unicorn-Kanchana titles... If they are visibly bronzed, there you go. Producing a list of affected titles is not going to be an easy task. I've seen more than one thread about this on this board and on Moviemusic.com. Do some research and maybe someone produced a list in one of those other threads, I guess.

I found this website address that seems to have a good explanation of what has happened here...

I also found another web page that might be of some use...

""Any compact discs on the Hyperion, ASV, Unicorn-Kanchana, or Pearl labels made in UK by Philips Dupont Optical UK (PDO) from 1988 to 1993 may already be unplayable. The symptoms appear as a bronze discolouration toward the outer edge of the label side and a clicking noise like surface noise toward the end of the disk. Disks made by PDO will have an identifying stamp near the center of the disk stating "made in UK" or "made in UK by PDO". PDO will replace these corroded disks. All they need is a list of catalogue numbers, you need not, at the moment, return the disks. "

Here is a thread over at Moviemusic.com that started back in 2000 and was updated sometime last summer...
