I believe there are at least a few different versions of The Wizard of Oz soundtracks, and I was wondering which one is the best, and if any of them also contained the score in addition to the musical numbers.

You'll be wanting this one then:

I have a copy of that one, and couldn't be more thrilled with it.

This is the Rhino deluxe release which has songs as well as a substantial representation of the Stothart score. Can't say if it's all there. As this is the most complete release of music from the film (2 discs), it presumably offers the largest available segment of score.

I'm somehow surprised that Rhino didn't re-mix the soundtrack for the 70TH Anniversary of the movie. I'm sure it would sell quite well. And don't get me started about the Decca cast album which has been out of print since the LP era...

Thanks for the info. Looks like that one has practically everything, and more! smile

Keep in mind that this one does have everything imaginable, but there is a 1-CD version released about 10 years ago that has better sound. It also includes excerpts from the movie itself.

My understanding is that the Rhino double-CD set contains the complete OZ score, (including out-takes), with the single sad exception of the missing chant track overlay of the Witch's soldiers.

Argh!! I thought that sounded the case when I was listening to samples on iTunes, but I was hoping maybe it was just a portion without them. How could they leave that vocals off probably one of the most well-remembered tracks? That's one of the ones I most wanted, too. frown

And don't get me started about the Decca cast album which has been out of print since the LP era...

When I was a child, I had an LP that had Wizard of Oz on one side, and Pinocchio on the other. It featured performances by the original cast members (including Judy doing "The Jitterbug"), but they weren't the original soundtracks. I must have played that literally hundreds of times. Is that the same one? If so, I, too, would love to have that available on CD.

Yes, that's the one I'm talking about. I don't know for sure, but didn't that LP also have an outtake from 'Pinocchio'?
Sure, Decca would have a tough time to re-issue the 'Pinocchio' album under current US copyright laws, but I don't see why they can't add the 'Wizard Of Oz' tracks to a compilation album. Even more surprising is that there even isn't a complete European release of this...

Was just watching this on TBS...what memories smile

Is the 2 disc set still the best? I've heard that the 2 disc is complete mono, whereas others are stereo?
Anyone able to shed some light on this?

The Rhino two disc set IS the best and most complete...and it is now out of print. The Rhino single disc is still quite thick with 26 tracks, pretty much a full CD....and it has been reissued and is available.

Charles you crack me UP!

I know the middle one, Jerry Maren, it would be funny to make a funny version of the Lollipop kids and then give it to him, I bet he would crack UP! He's going great, he's, I think 90, now.

Lollipop GUILD!

Lots of people have misheard "Lollipop Guild" as "Lollipop Kids."

Even Salman Rushdie, in his book . . .

. . . quotes the scene as "Lollipop Kids."

It's "Guild"!

"Lullaby League" and "Lollipop Guild." Get it?

The importance of this information does not in any way negate the fact that I'm a weenie for pointing it out.

It never occurred to me before, but you know who wouldn't look out of place as a member of the Lollipop Guild . . .

Odd that someone mentions the single Rhino disc has better sound - it doesn't.
Rhino just dropped all the underscore tracks and concentrated on the sings

The old Decca album of Pinochio is fun as it includes all kinds of songs not used in the final film.

Charles Thaxton---hilarious photo. Thanks for posting.

I have every CD available of the Wizard of Oz soundtrack, but for my money I have gotten the most enjoyment from the extensive "jukebox" extras on the Wizard of Oz DVDs. The last several DVD releases, along with the Blu Ray (according to an online description), have included this:

"Audio Vault (6 Hours +): Includes a Jukebox of Recording Session Materials, Radio Shows and Promos Off to See the Wizard TV Series Excerpt"

It's essentially the surviving studio recordings (all in mono) and includes outakes, deleted material, rehearsal recordings with Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, munchkin voice tests, songs by Buddy Ebsen (original Tin Man), etc., of the entire soundtrack. These go on for hours and I put them on five CDs for my personal listening pleasure.

I hope to see a release of the full stereo, original soundtrack on CD at some point. On that note, my favorite CD release of Wizard of Oz is: "The Story & Songs Of The Wizard Of Oz - Special Edition: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack." This is available at amazon.com and other sites and the tracks on this CD are in stereo. It features a majority of the entire movie (dialogue and songs), but was edited to fit on one CD--all the songs are there, though.

Question...
What's the deal with the stereo soundtrack?
Why weren't stereo tracks put on the Rhino 2 disc?
