Although I would be content with a repressing of the album (most of the good stuff, and a decent listening experience if you program it correctly), I'd love to have an expanded version of this Horner classic. Who has the rights to this, anyway?

Incidentally... I had a friend of mine (who's a big Trek fan) listen to The Chase. He was VERY amused by the minute or so that sounded like Wrath of Khan. smile

Do you mean to say Horner borrows from himself?

JK! I would like an expanded as well. However a lot of the "missing" music I believe is big band stuff.

I would like the last three tracks to run seamlessly the way they appeared to in the film.

I just watched this. It's been ages since the last time I did. I went to pull out the soundtrack and to my surprise I don't have it. I got confused with the sequel cd soundtrack which I do have. I went on to purchase Cocoon online, and was shocked by the prices. How can the score of such a well known blockbuster be OOP? I had no idea it was OOP.
Checking Soundtrack Collector I noticed that the original cd's including the re-issue contain only 44 minutes of music. I'm sure there must be more music than this in the film. No matter how good the film music is at this point in time I'm not going to spend $100 to get myself one cd.
Is there a chance that we might ever see a re-release? I mean is there a copyright issue that Cocoon is not being reprinted?
Out of all the last titles FSM is planning to release, an expanded Cocoon would really be a nice one. Perhaps together with expanded music from the sequel as well making it an ultimate 2 cd release of Cocoon bliss.

Great score, one of Horner's finest.
Deserve a complete score edition for sure.

I totally agree. I still find the main theme to be very beautiful -- I don't think that I'll ever tire of it.

Actually, come to think of it, I would love to have a complete "Cocoon" and "Cocoon: The Return". Granted, Horner recycles in the second movie, but he also tinkers around in "Cocoon: The Return" so I enjoy both. I'll admit that I would pay good money for a 3-4 CD set that had everything from the scores to both movies.

This thread has gotten me to put both CDs back into regular rotation.

Cocoon would need a re-release, not necessarily expanded. The best music is already on the original CD.

The less said about Cocoon: The Return the better. wink

While I agree that the bulk of the good stuff is on the original CD, there are some lovely variations and more of those trademark Horner tinkly piano moments not on the disc that would make me throw down the quids for an expansion.
There's also that flourishing piece when we first meet Jack on his boat, plus the suspense and chase stuff in the old folks home before Horner gets to his big finale stuff.
I'd guess there's around 15 minutes of unreleased, proper score material, possibly more if you include any extra big band stuff.
I think Cocoon 2 has a lot more unreleased stuff?

Apparently so did the marketing team behind the release of SUPER 8, since they used it very overtly in the memorable trailers for that film.

I think Intrada and LLL would do a fantastic job. An expanded edition would be just great. There is a piece called The Dolphins I think that is playing as they are on Jack's boat and the dolphins are swimming next to them that is fantastic.

Surely a reissue, expanded or not, is way overdue, so another vote here for the labels to look into this smile This CD has been too expensive on the second-hand market for at least a decade (or two?).

You know, that cue in particular, and the score in general, is very high on my grail list.

A Remastered and expanded/complete (preferably) reissue would be most welcome.

P.E.G., who last released the CD, is long gone, and the score is now an overpriced secondary market gem.

I'm glad to have it, but it deserves to be out there.

Hopefully, LLLR or Intrada will pick it up and run with it.

Let me see here… this thread has been open since 18th March 2010….
We are almost in March you could say….
So nearly 3 years, and we are still talking about Cocoon on the first page!?
Is there such a small fan base for this score?
Why isn’t it a huge priority on peoples list?
I have talked about this score in other threads – I mean – I do mention it!
So – is it likely to happen? Are we going to get those master tapes out of the “cool room” and do this score the justice it deserves?
There are times when I believe this score to be superior to anything that John Williams has ever written! The score is so lush and beautiful and the orchestra sounds like ocean waves! Have a really close listen to Theme from Cocoon, and tell me it does not sound like that. Even in the opening track “Through The Window” – around the 2 minute and 15 second mark, you will hear a wave coming up! (but I do suggest playing the entire track, and have a close listen – simply amazing!)
This is why this score needs that volume raised far more than what it is on the current CDs – and digital sound, so that we can hear all those wonderful orchestrations – imagine how good “The Boys Are Out” will sound once it gets the proper treatment!
Oh well, I guess 10 - 15 people is not enough to ensure an expanded (Complete Score) – I guess composers like Hans Zimmer who only give us wallpaper music is what really counts these days. Boo Hoo!

I WANT BOTH COCOON SCORES COMPLETE AND REMASTERED!

Please Get those Master Tapes out of the Cool Room, and start to work on them, we are getting older by the day - and these scores are long overdue! It is James Horner's GREATEST Composition!

I want it....... Badly. It's the biggest gap in my Horner collection.

I haven't checked, but I'd imagine there are a few other threads devoted to the film and/or the score in the search engine thingy. I'm sure the labels know if they released this it would sell good at least a 1000 copies would go quick. Let's hope this can come out before we could have been an extra in Cocoon smile

hmmm... the question is if those 1000 copies would be enough to cover the costs of licencing, remastering and producing new album... There is no doubt that score to such a popular movie deserves to be available in complete form and best possible quality... but my priority would be still some scores that are either completely unavailable (In Country, Deadly Blessing, The Hand, I Love you to Death,...), have been pretty much unobtainable for decades (Vibes) or are available in shitty format (Apollo 13, Swing Kids, Boy in the Stripped Pajamas, Karate Kid, My Heroes Have Always been the cowboys,...).

If Intrada can do a small James Horner Score like 48HRS - and give it 5000 copies -
I'm sure Cocoon can "at least" get a Limited Run of 3000.
