While we're celebrating the release of George Delerue's score to MAXIE, I thought that I should mention his score to PARTNERS (1982). The joyously swirling End Titles waltz is one of my favorites.

The video is worth picking up for those End Titles alone. I don't see it on YouTube.

The film was a flop, grossing only $4 million, so not a lot of people are familiar with it. But the Delerue score was special. I quite enjoyed the movie when I saw it. Read the reviews on Amazon.

If the score won't be forthcoming, here's the Amazon link:

http://www.amazon.com/Partners-Ryan-ONeal/dp/B0019UGYBY/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1279675762&sr=1-1

All I have is a mono VHS. For about six bucks (including shipping), you can get a new DVD (hopefully with the End Titles in stereo). I just ordered one (fingers crossed).

Anyone else familiar with this score?

Don't really remember the music, but I do remember seeing the film in a theater when it first came out.

Vaguely remember it being about 2 cop partners and one was gay.

I think John Hurt was the gay one and it seemed there was a lot of stereotypical gay jokes and stuff.

Would love to hear the music, I'm sure it is quite nice, as Delerue's typically is.

I'd put out for a $4.00 DVD.

I saw this when it came out in San Francisco. Extremely bad film in all departments...except Delerue's music, of course. I would suggest fans of Ryan O'Neal and John Hurt AVOID this film at all costs. Insulting, humorless, homophobic, overflowing with negative stereotypes in the portryal of gays. John Hurt playing a severely closeted gay man in the police force is partnered with straight policman O'Neal to infiltrate....something or other - hey, it's been 30 years. But the bad aftertaste to this film lingers to this day. As an undercover gay police officer Hurt cannot even hold a gun in his shaking hands and of course, drops it at a crucial time.
The Score however is very nice. I wish it were in a different film. How bad is this film? Well, it flopped in San Francisco too. Not even a hunky Ryan O'Neal in hot pants (please) used as a decoy could save this crap. I seem to recall (I could be wrong here) that one of the creators of the original 'La Cage Aux Folles' was behind this film.
Sure, release the score and buy it! But avoid this film on tape or dvd if you ever cross paths with it.

I don't remember the score for some reason, but what I DO remember is the odd silence that accompanies the opening credit sequence, which plays as Hurt goes to see his chief and is waiting in the police station. I wondered if there had been a song used that was cut for the DVD because the sequence just seemed really odd without any music at all, especially for a comedy.

Interesting to note Jack Hayes did "Special Orchestrations" on this. I was never aware that Delerue ever used an orchestrator for his scores, but if you listen to that first instance of music in the film, it doesn't sound at all like a typical Delerue orchestration. My guess is that is where you have Mr. Hayes' influence.

I guess that Hayes orchestrated some jazzy jazz music - if there is any jazz music in the movie. Can't imagine that he orchestrated some of Delerue's (pure) orchestral music smile

My DVD arrived. The End Titles are in glorious MONO. Oh well...one could hope.

It's still a fabulous Delerue cue.

I always wanted to use this cue as a "Guess The Composer and Guess The Film" stumper.

EVERYONE would correctly guess Delerue. Indisputably Delerue.

I just wonder how many would have been able to guess the film.

There really isn't much music in the film and it's fairly low tier Delerue. I also had a hard time getting through the movie.

Another Delerue Paramount score.

Though it is fairly short (under 30 minutes), I wonder what are the chances of this score seeing a CD release, perhaps paired with something, anything?

Glorious end-title music ! I've had that on a Delerue cassette compilation tape made back in the early '90's. It's truly wonderful to see so many of his scores surfacing on disc so long after his passing...

Typical wonderful melodic Delerue theme.A vocal for that melody would have been great.
