I remember absolutely loving this film when I first saw it in the early 80's.
It's a low-key thriller starring Stacey Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, about a truck driver (Keach), travelling across Australia, who becomes involved with a hitchhiker (Curtis), and a game of cat-and-mouse with a serial-killer ensues.
The Australian outback locale adds immensely to the feeling of alienation and isolation that Keach feels during the film.
Like other Richard Franklin* films, it owes a great deal to Alfred Hitchcock (indeed, he would go on to direct the massively underrated PSYCHO II) in it's execution and technique.
It also features a spot-on Brian May score, who cements the whole thing with a bolero-like main theme and some excellent suspense scoring.
I just picked up the DVD for under a fiver on amazon and cannot wait to sit down and relive this film.
It's just a shame I cannot do likewise with the impossible to find CD, which is long out of print.
Nobody here has a copy they want to sell or trade, do they?
Anyway, anyone seen this film? Heard the score? What d'ya think?

*other Richard Franklin directed films include PATRICK, LINK, CLOAK & DAGGER and the pilot for the series BEAUTY & THE BEAST.

It did have a CD release (a twofer paired with May's score for PATRICK) - pretty good score, and instantly recognisable as a Brian May score.

The film was very suspenseful and quite atmospheric as I recall (haven't seen it for years); I remember that previous to this film, I'd only ever seen the writer (Everett de Roche) credited on various Australian action series, like CHOPPER SQUAD and SPECIAL SQUAD, etc. He went on to pen some top-notch features.

Now were talking. This score was on my most wanted list for years until I discovered it for sale at 1M1. A must own for fans of Mays music- I consider it and Frog Dreaming to be his best work.

The movie is smart and thrilling. A rare breed indeed.

"Just because one drives a truck, does not make him a truck driver."

I LOVE this score. Definitely one of my "happy place" cd's that I throw on when I'm feeling in the dumps. That bolero is so catchy and brimming with Brian May awesomeness.

I saw ROAD GAMES a few months ago, from a TCM broadcast. Unfortunately, they telecast a pan-and-scan version of the film. But the widescreen DVD is still available (used) at reasonable prices. Not so the Brian May soundtrack CD. 1M1 Records is still selling it, if you have a spare AUD$250 on you. Fortunately, that's only $235 U.S.

I love this movie so much, I made it the first film I ever reviewed on the net:

I still treasure my copy of the soundtrack.

A marvelous little thriller... fine cast... some intentional black humor pulled off with quite a bit of flair.

The score by Brian May adds to the proceedings.

So glad 1M1 released a whole slew of Brian May scores a couple of decades ago. They do pop up from time to time, but usually have a higher price tag than most.

I know what I will be watching tonight... Love this movie.

Thanks for the link Josh, quite an interesting site. Some good stuff there.
That's the cheapest I've ever seen that CD, so you've just answered my question from the top of the thread. Cheers smile
It will be mine!!

Now that's what I call a real film poster above.
Great design and art, clever and witty too.
A neat/cool poster for a neat/cool film.

Terrific little suspense flick. I'd like to see Scream Factory or maybe Synapse do a Special Edition Blu-Ray. That would complete all of Jamie Lee Curitis's original Scream Queen movies on Blu and make me a happy camper. smile

I would just like to say THANK YOU to Josh Mitchell once more for the info link, as I am now the proud owner of this classic combo (Road Games + Patrick) and for a LOT LESS than the 250 Aussie Dollars I've hankered after previously.
Cheers mate! smile

So, did Brian May only score films with the name "Road" in it?

No, he did the first two Mad Max films ;-)

Love Road Games. The scence where Keatch counts the carcasses in his truck and finds one too many is genuinely chilling.

I've been put off revisiting the film as reviews say the DVD transfer isn't so good but hopefully Arrow - who have done such an awesome job of far less deserving horrors (The Car, Squirm) - will give it a decent Blu-ray release.

This is a gem of a score from May. Great melody as well as the great action cues you'd expect from one of his scores. One cue: "Hallucination" , really demonstrates how May was right up there talent wise with the greats but never really got the films he deserved.
