Charming romantic/drama/comedy score if a bit lightweight. If you like Marc Shaiman scores for Rob Reiner films, but more dynamic, or if you like/loved Alan Silvestri's Forrest Gump; then you will like this.

Agreed, Kevin--charming in the extreme. It and GRAND CANYON are the James Newton Howard scores that made me a JNH fan.

I remember seeing this film in the theater in 1993, and found the score very uninteresting. And I usually like JNH.

Forrest Gump is a far better score, IMO.

Forrest Gump is far more static in the performances of the different themes on the album, which makes it uninteresting.

Wow. Maybe you should listen again. Really. Even if you didn't like it back then (which is pretty shocking), the last 10 years or so of dreck will more than likely make Dave sound like the greatest score ever.

A wonderful score that served the film perfectly. I particularly like the cue...er don't remember the title, but it's when Dave does his first appearance as the President and does the "God bless America" bit. The music is lively and memorable in that sequence.

Film and score, I like them both. Nice main titles. I rate them the same as The American President, another of my personal favourites.

DAVE had at least two really great things going for it. 1. another fine performance by Kevin Kline 2. another fine score by J. N. Howard. Lightweight? Certainly... it was just that kind of film. But it really makes me feel great after I see it (or after I listen to the score).

JN Howard's DAVE is the masterpiece in comedy-romatic scoring. The perfect album Marc Shaiman or John Debney never achieved.

album musical entity benefits from the movie doing the usual montages with original score instead of songs.

I do like Marc Shaiman for Patch Adams and Simon Birch. Never tried out Dave from JNH. Only thing that comes close at the time maybe is My Girl, which I have heard.

Respectfully disagree. The American President is about as perfect as a romantic comedy score can ever hope to be.

I'd second that..

One of the very first Howard scores I ever purchased back in the day. Still one of his loveliest, despite all of the temp-track ripoffs in the years since (by Howard and many others).

This is one of my favorite Howard scores. He does a great job at capturing Dave's warmth and playful nature ("She Hates Me") or his humbleness ("To the White House"). One of my favorite moments is also in this latter cue, in the scene where Bob Alexander and Alan Reed are trying to determine what to do with the president in a vegetative state. There's a great moment when it cuts to a closeup of an unsuspecting Dave sitting in the limo, and you hear his motif subtly playing.

Is anyone else having this problem with the expanded release? At the end of track 19, "Bedrooms/Bob Drops Bomb/Keep Moving", the sound drops out for a-quarter-of-a-second before segueing into track 20.

I loved "Dave" the movie as well as "Dave" the James Newton Howard score. But this is the first I've heard of an expanded soundtrack, but I see that this thread goes back to 2011, before I had ever heard of this site. Here's the last 10 minutes of the movie, where Sigourney Weaver shows up at Dave's campaign headquarters:

I searched and searched for them but must not have used just the right words to bring them up. I assume the expanded CD sold out?
