I'm hoping this is GOOD. I love Yimou's scores, I'm a huge fan of Hero and House of Flying Daggers. This composer is unknown to me, really looking forward to this movie. This CD seems to have been released December 20th but I can't find more info or somewhere to buy it.
If the movie is good (and I think it will be) there are good chances it will grab an oscar.

Chen is Yi Mou's cooperate composer in recent his works like Under the Hawthorn Tree and also the theme song in 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
And the score of Under the Hawthorn Tree was only released in China.
Wow that's right, I forgot about that. I've seen Under the Hawthorn Tree, beautiful but extremely sad movie. I even looked for the score but couldn't find it, I'm gonna try to hunt it down now.
Just saw the movie and as I expected it was beautiful. There's no new project listed for Yimou at IMDB, I can't get enough of his work. The score is lovely, already pre-ordered it. The movie didn't even get a nomination for the Oscars (although it did for the Golden Globes), what a joke.
I just got his. A gorgeous, gorgeous score! Hard to believe there wasn't more talk about it back in 2011. Some of it reminds me of Fenton's ANNA AND THE KING.
Interestingly, I first discovered Qigang Chen via classical music albums, such ones on REM or Virgin Classics.
Haven't heard any of QC's film scores, but hearing them described as beautiful is a surprise to me because QC can be quite a post-modernist when regarding his concert works.
This soundtrack album for "The Floweres of War" from Sony is on one CD and is available from Amazon online at a surprisingly low price. Just got it and the music is simply sumptious. Wow!! What a great score in the vein of traditional masses and classical symphonies. And the blend of western and eastern musical sounds is some of the best available. The religious cues are more mystical and almost other worldly to my ear. The 26 cues at over 50 minutes are somewhat alternately sequenced with vocals and instrumentals. This mainly soft quiet work is highly recommended in my opinion. It does not come much better.
One of the best scores of 2011. I only heard it in 2013, but if I had heard it at the time, it would have been a contender for best score of the year, for sure.
