Very proud to announce on this board the definitive release of my all-time favourite score and which happens to be, obvisouly, the score I have played the most in my life...
And with this new release I reckon now no other score will ever beat that one !

NORTH BY NORTHWEST

Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 207
Date: 1959

Tracks: 28
Time = 69:17

Price: $19.99

Due 08/09/12

At long last! Oft-recorded Bernard Herrmann masterpiece finally gets complete release in dynamic stereo from new masters! Previous release on Rhino label was spectacular album, albeit several major set pieces (including main title & climactic Mount Rushmore sequence) were transferred from damaged elements, all that was then available. Thanks to Warner Bros., new stereo mixes have been made available for first time ever, revealing spectacular sonics (for 1959) and illuminating new details of magnificent score never before captured. While score has also been digitally re-recorded twice under different conductors, neither version can match crisp, exciting performance of MGM Studio musicians under baton of Herrmann himself. Hear harp arpeggios, castenets, wood blocks, snare drums like never before. Get entire climax with punch of bass trombone, thrilling trumpets amidst swirling variety of tempos that keep tension, excitement of Hitchcock's incredible action set-piece moving at fierce pace. Alfred Hitchcock's brilliant film stars Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, young Martin Landau and is regarded as one of director's greatest achievements. Crop-dusting scene, Mount Rushmore climax are movie icons. Romance between Grant, Saint is heartfelt, all the more so with Herrmann's tender love theme for strings. Composer is also major part of excitement, suspense of wild tale. Under loving guidance of Neil Bulk & Lukas Kendall, Herrmann's score comes home at last not only with best sound possible but also with first-ever reproduction of original MGM artwork campaign, color stills, informative notes by Frank DeWald, complete cue assembly details plus musician's list. The final word on North By Northwest! Bernard Herrmann conducts. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remains.

I knew the original tracks had to be released again after the isolated score track from the 2000 DVD kicked the ass of the 1995 Rhino disc in terms of sound quality.

The track 23 seems to be a “cohesive suite” of six separate cues, in pure Special Castration style. WOW! roll eyes

Yes, that's exactly how you hear those cues in the movie. Enjoy!

A very welcome release.

BTW "informative notes by Frank De Walk" should read "informative notes by Frank DeWald."

Don't feed the troll.

If you listen with headphones there's some interesting editing going on in the overture, as evidenced by abrupt changes in the stereo sound field. It still sounds cleaner than ever though.

Man, listen to that detail in "The Ledge!"

I have the old Rhino and I am plenty satisfied with the McNeely re-recording. But kudos for Intrada for making this available to folks who want it. This is an absolute classic and it should always be available.

No troll-feeding here. This is exactly the way it should be done. They may be separate cues for technical purposes, but they make one cohesive piece of music. To turn your analogy around, to separate them would be like separating one's penis from one's body. And I could do without that.

Thank you so much Intrada for finally releasing the original recording of my 2nd favorite film score of all time! In case you're wondering what number one is, it's JAWS. Let's hope Universal lets Intrada release that one properly. Until then, NxNW baby!

Shall we have some North by Northwest trivia in honor of this monumental release (I do wish someone over at Intrada would write press releases in English rather than this staccato thing they do leaving out all sorts of words in an effort to the the Walter Winchell of labels):

What was the original title of the film?

What was the original name of James Mason's character, Vandamm?

What was "George Kaplan's" original last name?

What was Lester Townsend's original last name?

I know all the answers because I recently came into a treasure trove of original Hitchcock material and one of the things is an early draft of North by Northwest under its original title.

I'm not sure if it was the original title, but I do seem to recall that one earlier title was "In a Northwesterly Direction." (or it may have been "In a Northwest Direction," damn my faulty memory!) As for the other answers - I do not know, but now my curiosity is fully piqued. It's one of my very favorite films.

I'm very excited about this release, and can't wait to hear the original performance in such sterling quality.

Now, has anyone ever heard or seen sheet music for the Van Heusen/Cahn song "The Man on Lincoln's Nose?"

You have inadvertently got the correct title: The Man on Lincoln's Nose.
