So Disney has acquired LucasFilm, and will start releasing new Star Wars movies in a few years. Since it seems improbably that John Williams will be along for the ride without Lucas at the helm . . . let the speculation begin!

I'll believe in a Episode 7 when I see it. (Especially since Lucas seems to have never expressed an interest in letting others continue the series in film form. Books, comics, video games, etc., sure, but never films.)

That said, my vote goes to Joel McNeely, based on the fantastic work he did with Shadows of the Empire. He would certainly be my first pick if I was in charge of such a film. (Provided, of course, Williams was uninterested in returning without Lucas.)

Rollerball. That's all I have to say.

Alan Menken.

But perhaps with Lucas finally out the movies won't suck that much as the previous try.

I think $4.05 billion may have made him interested.

This is an elaborate prank, right? It can't possibly be for real.

Frankly, my dears, I don't give a damn about who bought what. And the whole "new STAR WARS movie" thing sounds a lot like marketing huffing & puffing for what most likely will be a COLNE WARS film.

But wouldn't it be poetic justice (and suck more than a bit for old Georgie) if under Disney's leadership someone would manage to do a truly great live-action STAR WARS movie, something Lucas was completely unable to do since 1983? big grin

RE: New STAR WARS movie - they wouldn't dare to do a re-boot of the saga, right? RIGHT?

It doesn't seem to be a joke.

I'm less interested in a new movie and more interested (now that Lucas is finally no longer in control) in a proper release of the original trilogy on a contemporary home format in HD quality rather than a dated, letterboxed 4:3 LaserDisc transfer.

Although without Lucas at the helm, I am interested to see where Star Wars can no go. No more inane space politics, I hope!

Is that in the cards? One would presume with control of Lucasfilm, Disney could now do this - but I assumed that Lucas would never allow this to be an option. Is he somehow retaining rights on the original trilogy, or is it now up to Disney? If that's the case, I'm even more flabbergasted.

Perhaps the Intrada/Disney partnership can now produce Star Wars and Indiana Jones soundtracks?

That's my hope, the our dear beloved Intrada will get to do expanded / complete Indy and Star Wars (Howard The Duck?)

I love Star Wars + Disney, but still not sure how I feel about this news...

Star Wars has already been bled to death with the expanded universe, merchandise, video games, etc.

Now I partly feel like Disney will just bleed it to complete annihilation..."In 2015, we're planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the "Disney-Lucasfilm" brand. That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years."

Every two to three years? Ugh...

So I'm torn really. And I enjoy the expanded universe mind you - but this seems overkill.

I am also wondering what happens to the Expanded Universe as I imagine Episode VII is not going to follow the lore and thus make the diehards quite frustrated.

Though I also think Episode VII could be a complete turd and the Lucas haters will come out saying it is a work of art or better than anything Lucas could do.

Will be interesting to see

If Williams doesn't score the next Star Wars film score the obvious choice is Michael Giacchino.

I thought for sure this was a post from The Onion. George's alimony payments must have gone up!

If the right people came to the table on this thing, this could be a great direction for Star Wars and could revitalize the franchise. But the chances of that not happening are great, and it will just drive the whole thing even further into the ground.

Which is not all too different from the status quo, honestly. Here's hoping for the best!

The Expanded Universe has a way of working itself out. There have been a number of occasions where something established in the EU was out-right contradicted in a film (such as Boba Fett's origins being completely negated by the Prequels) and later works come along that sort of smooth things out for the EU without totally screwing up continuity.

The EU has actually always been considered canon by LucasFilm, so great care has been taken to try and keep it as consistent as possible, even in the case of contradictions that later need to be worked out. (Unlike the Star Trek EU where, say, Kirk was resurrected seemingly half a dozen times by various authors without any explanation.)

It's a big WTF, but since that there's books that takes place after Episode 6, I think that it's not as crazy.

It is, but Joel McNeely has found quite a lot of employment with the Disney company in the last few years...
