Bigger Ugh -- Jaden Smith!
I think it'll still be better than The Last Airbender.  I must admit I was still kinda bummed that movie bombed because we could've had some epic JNH for the sequels! Hopefully this will be equally epic.
Other than Last Airbender and maybe Lady in the Water, I don't really understand the hate for M. Night though.
My wife and I thought The Happening was incredibly disturbing and fantastic (amazing score definitely helped), though I can understand why people don't like it. I think a lot of people didn't get the humor in it though. And I can't fathom why all the hate for The Village; I thought it was superb. Also, the film he produced called Devil bears his fingerprints all over it and is really creepy and well done IMO.
Unbreakable is my favorite.

This trailer looks very interesting IMO.
If the "Will Smith and Son"-backlash does not sink it Shyamalan could have another huge hit on his hands.
Shyamalan is a very good director, no doubt about it, but the way he conducted himself during interviews was probably causing the backlash even more than his last three films.
THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE, SIGNS and THE VILLAGE are IMO very well directed and constructed stories.
THE LADY IN THE WATER was nowhere near as bad as people (on the internet) said it was - but it felt truncated and only like one part of a bigger story. And the biggest PR blunder Shymalan ever did was casting himself as the author. He should have known that nobody loves someone who is successful behind the camera suddenly pushing himself as an actor into the limelight.
THE HAPPENING was a very interesting idea. And please, don´t tell me "Who would try to outrun the wind?". If you knew something in the wind was killing you, you would NOT stand still and say: hey, it would be absurd if I moved now. You would run. Because that is a human instinct.
Apart from that, the love story between Wahlberg and Deschanel was severely underwritten and did not work at all. And IMO both actors were terribly miscast. Imagine the film with other, really capable actors and it would be instantly better.
THE LAST AIRBENDER suffered from expectations from all the fans of the animated series. I did not watch the series and thought the film was entertaining but not really special.
What is a constant source of joy in all Shyamalan´s films, however, are James Newton Howard´s scores. Shyamalan seems to inspire him to deliver his best work.
Another reason to look forward to AFTER EARTH. Their artistic partnership really works.

The same could be said of almost any bad movie. There are very few movies so innately flawed that they couldn't have been improved by some basic adjustment at the beginning of the process: different casting, a competent director, some slight structural changes to the script, whatever.
True. But in the case of THE HAPPENING I really think that Wahlberg and Deschanel were completely wrong for their roles. Wahlberg never was believable as a school teacher IMO, a role that for example would have worked much better with a brainier type, say Adrian Brody. And instead of kooky Deschanel, someone like Amy Adams would have been better, IMO.
