Laurence Rosenthal's score to the 1989 telefilm The Forgotten serves as a powerful example of one of Rosenthal’s greatest strengths as a film composer: his ability to write music that not only fits the action, but speaks with great clarity to the underlying truth of the characters. The characters are tortured individuals in wrenching circumstances, and Rosenthal’s music does not shy away from this. But he places their suffering into a broader context—one that honors their sacrifice without resorting to sentimentality or nationalism. While the entire score—with its elegant main theme and variety of dramatic cues— bears noting, the score also features some Rosenthal's most exciting and energetic action sequences, including staccato figures for woodwinds and propulsive percussion including xylophone.
The complete score is presented here from the pristine stereo 15-ips 1/4" masters.
The film is based on an original teleplay by Steve Railsback (who also co-starred) and James Keach (who directed), and tells the story of six Green Berets who for seventeen years endured harsh conditions and torture in a Vietnamese POW camp, where they were taken after a mission gone disastrously wrong. In advance of delicate trade negotiations, they are released as a goodwill gesture. Instead of being taken home to America, however, they are secreted away to a West German facility under heavy guard. There they are aggressively interrogated by the sinister Adam Roth (Stacy Keach).

World premiere CD release of Laurence Rosenthal soundtrack for James Keach picture set during Vietnam war, starring Keith Carradine, Steve Railsback. Film was initial original film venture for USA Network, helped bring attention to young broadcaster. Rosenthal creates powerful thematic material, surrounds with action ideas, melodic ones as well. As composer explains, main thematic material is not militaristic, nor even American in tone, but more Romantic in period feel, even Wagnerian. Other highlights include zigzag action rhythms of "Escape To Bonn", "The Hunters", which are some of Rosenthal's most exciting cues ever. Entire album was assembled from 1/4" 15 ips stereo session tapes maintained by the composer in pristine condition. Laurence Rosenthal conducts. It's a great score, and the main theme alone is fantastic. The sort of theme that you hear once and don't forget.
Did you write the notes for this one? Intrada's website/press release doesn't say.

I don't think Rosenthal has ever written bad music, honestly.
I'm glad to see that the Signature Edition is still alive! I was getting worried when Glory and Honor went out of print because at that point there wasn't a single Signature title still in print (and the last one to be released was the disappointing Richard Band Dragonworld).

I'm not talking about the Asian melody that opens the first clip, by the way. The main theme is first heard in full at 1:30.
