Hi Bruce,

Though unsolicited, I want to tell you what I like and don't like about your releases. I believe it is always worthwhile to hear what the customer says.

I love the scores you are releasing--the type of "Golden Age" scores that for the most part have gone undeservedly out of favor. I like the scores you choose, the sound quality, and the cleaning up you do with them.

But here's where I think you could improve:

1. Graphic design--please pardon me for putting this way: the images are just slapped on the page without any attention to what pleases the eye

2. Lack of color--I understand sometimes color stills don't exist. But even when the score is from a color film you print the booklet in B&W. These days color printing costs no more than black and white--so I don't understand.

3. Notes: Frankly, there's not enough detail about the movie itself and even the track listings. What relationship do some of the bonus cues--that aren't marked as original versions or film versions--have to do with the entire score? Are they just source cues or outtakes? Are they rejected cues? Where do they belong in the narrative of the film? As an aside, timings would be nice, too (though we can see them when we put on the disc).

Most younger people will never return from the world of downloads--and it may not be possible to entice them back to CDs one can hold and keep. But for the people who I believe buy your releases...who appreciate CDs...looking at them...holding them...the CD functions as something beyond the music--well into the preservation of memory. To look at images...to read words...and to hear music evoke cherished moments that have meant--and continue to mean--so much.

In the old days, film companies understood that and--along with their road show films--put out colorful booklets that enhanced or prepared audiences for an experience.

In no way am I trying to take away from the immeasurable service you provide to those of us who lived or still prefer living in the Golden Age. We are grateful to have the music and to remember the films they accompanied. And, I know for you, this has to be a true labor of love. However, if memory serves me correctly, I recall Lukas saying that for him putting out a CD was not just about the music. The Booklet...the notes...the images...they were all part of the experience he wanted to recapture--a CD one would want to treasure.

I believe you came close to that with your recent release of Laura. I hope you will find the time, the effort and possibly the money to do it again ( I know you're not getting rich off these projects). It would make the experience of listening your CDS so much richer...filling them with the memories they so richly deserve.

Respectfully,

Charles

PS: Any chance of releasing Victor Young's The Uninvited (soon to be issued in Blu Ray) or Love Letters?

Kritzerland is . . . Kritzerland.

That's the way Bruce does it. There is a certain economy to the CD presentations, sure. I think we can be thankful we can 'have and hold' CDs from Kritzerland . . . at all.

Hi Bruce,

Though unsolicited, I want to tell you what I like and don't like about your releases. I believe it is always worthwhile to hear what the customer says.

OPEN LETTER TO SHANE.

1.) Whenever someone posts something like this, they are more often then not VASTLY MORE INTERESTED in getting an audience to say how right they are and inflate their ego then anything else.

2.) You have only posted TWICE (Counting this time) since 2011...That's always a redflag

3.) Why the hell didn't you email DIRECTLY to Mr. Kimmel or post it on the KRITZERLAND forum before here? You couldn’t find his email on the KRITZERLAND site?

(Got back to point one for the most likely answer).

4.) While you of course entitled to your opinion, Mr. Kimmel owns was one of the founders of VARESE SARABANDE and has been in this field for the last 35 years, so I suspect he knows what he is doing in terms of his releases, the ones he pays for out of his own pocket.

5.) If you are so unhappy with what he is doing, why not start you own label and do it the way you want it.

6.) If you're going to post this sort of nonsense, why not sign your FULL REAL NAME to it. When you don't, there is a reason for this.

This is funny!!

We knew it would not take long for Mr. Thaxton to give his words of wisdom, because he falls under his #1 and always states the same thing over and over.

OPEN LETTER TO MR. THAXTON

I believe Bruce Kimmel can defend himself as he will, but you are often VASTLY MORE INTERESTED in getting an audience to say how right you are and are trying to inflate your own ego. I always get a kick out of those on here that go back and look at what others have posted (or how many times one has posted). Most of the time, it is the people who need to spend more time on their releases and less time here.

As always, wrong...

Cowardly fanboys (Like yourself) love to post this sort of nonsense while hiding behind their screen name.

On the other hand, I just posted what I really think and SIGN MY NAME to it.

It's called taking Responsibility for what I post, something that folks like the original poster and yourself just don't like doing.

As I do, well I did not include my middle initial. I admit I am a fangirl and if it were not for the fanboys and fangirls, who would buy your releases?

Although this is called an open letter I personally find little open about it. It is, in a rather quiet and gentle way, a little subversive. How is Bruce supposed to even respond? "Ya know, ya gotta point. I'll do better." Really? Does the writer of the open letter have a clue what a miracle it is that these scores are even being released in the first place?

Even though I am stepping in to defend Bruce here it really feels awkward. Bruce doesn't need me to defend him. He doesn't need any of us, really, since his ongoing work speaks for itself. So my two cents, my humble response to reading this post comes down one essential thing: praise publicly and privately scold. It's a good way to act in business, in life and online.

Bingo, that's it.

I am often guilty of using ten words when two will do. I'm working on improving that, though.

YOR does not understand.

The original poster, whatever his true name is, was just asking for better artwork.

Why people get so mad about it?

And you know 'Kim Tong' is not a real name because.... ?

I can't help noticing Ford, that you're the first to jump all over someone and call their stuff nonsense whenever even the slightest criticism is made about a release/label/whatever.

Should we make a mental note to praise every release like fanboys just because they've been in the business for some time?

Well you clearly missed the point..

Pay attention you'll learn something important.

The original poster is of course entitled to his opinion, but clearly he couldn't take the time to send a private email to Mr. Kimmel to address this, but not he posts it on a public forum.

Why do that?

Based on my experience on hanging out here for nearly 15 years, just to inflate his ego and get folks wo piss on Kimmel and praise him for calling this label out for not meeting HIS STANDARDS.

In short, he wasn't trying to thoughtful or helpful, he just wanted to be an arrogant twit.

IMHO of course.

As for "Kim Tong" being his real name....

I'd like to have that confirmed by a independent and checkable source.

Is that asking too much?

The response is not about discouraging criticism. Had the writer of the original post stated that he wasn't always loving the artwork or making some other personal observation - good or bad, that's one thing. But this was a bit of a tome, with numbered and very specific gripes. I lost the the "constructive" element of it halfway through. No one is required to be a gushing fanboy. But if you're going to make nitpicks you should choose your words and approach more thoughtfully. Otherwise, you fall into the trap of being guilty of a worse sin than what you're complaining about.

So you are saying that criticism is only acceptable if the author do it the way you think it is the way to do it?

It makes no sense.

The consumer is always right, don't you know that?

People who make their living by trying to sell products should embrace criticism, whatever the way it is made.

Why?

Simple: because is good for their own business!

Nothing wrong with the tone of his comments to me, and nothing wrong with having specific gripes either (ones I happen to concur with, if not as strongly). In fact, the original message is very positive about the label outside of those points.

And Ford, while I can agree that posting on here asking about orders is rather pointless (exactly what e-mail is for), this is more about the release itself, and I think invites other opinions, and perhaps a response from Bruce that everyone can read.

For some reason, anything like this voiced in public is a sign of a huge ego in your eyes. Which is more productive - complaining about his complaint, or adding your two pennies to the discussion as someone who also runs a label?
