The original "First Blood" has an elegiac, almost haunted musical subtext that in no way diminishes the all-aces action scoring when J.R. (not Ewing ) turns the bloody tables on his tormentors. Ours would undeniably go to the gobsmackingly GLOrius "Part Two" with one outstanding set piece after another that runs the rich gamut from pulsating preparation, adrenalin anticipation, potential affection, capture, resurrection and exhilirating culminating codas that are as dynamically dramatic as its final reflective thematic summation. Part III demonstrates the Gold-Standard's dexterity at weaving atmospheric passages with his usual patented punch (punctuated to perfection in our favorite cue, "The Game"); tho it appears to be wall-to-wall hyperkinetic action, there's so much more to aurally be impressed by. But that was the same year he was nominated for POLTERGEIST and I probably would give it to that one first. But that was one year I was totally happy ET won. Tough to choose, but I would go with 1988's Rambo III. A great mix of orchestra and synths and over 70 minutes long. I'd have unloaded plenty of Oscars on Jerry Goldsmith if I had my way, but for titles like PATTON, CHINATOWN and STAR TREK though, not these. But if I had to name the best one, I go with the original: FIRST BLOOD. It's not that I don't think they're great scores, but for me PERSONALLY (and I can't emphasize that word enough) they're not my favorite kind of Goldsmith and they're not my favorite kind of film score. I'd save the Oscars for the things I really, really love. But that's just me. They paid for Jerry Goldsmith's house remember If I would give an award to one of them, it would have to be First Blood, because it set the tone and the theme is just so beautiful. Goldsmith did 90 % of the acting for Stallone who was so disappointed with the movie he wanted to destroy the negatives. I think if ever Goldsmith made a movie work, it has to be First Blood. Just an amazing, breathtaking action score. I definitely agree! This score is certainly Oscar worthy, probably the best action score of all time as far as I am concerned. There were numerous times Jerry was robbed of an Oscar but I don't think the Rambo scores were any of those occassions. Not only is it the foundation for all the sequels, it is IMO also the most haunting score of them all. It is as good or better than the majority of Oscar winners in the last few years. Part 2 is an almost non-stop thrill ride with some wonderfully propulsive action cues, a hugely enjoyable album. Rambo 3 is a favorite of mine, beginning with a slow burn and building to some rich, intense action with a wonderful finale cue ( replaced in the film by a horrid, horrid song ) . For sure. I once owned the Silva Screen CD of Rambo II. I sold it, I felt it was the wrong score for me.
