Having previously seen Nic Raine conduct a concert of Barry music in Edinburgh with the RSNO in 2000, I knew that this was going to be pretty special. The Royal Philharmonic played beautifully all evening and by any standards it was a strong programme of Barry music. Loved the Robin and Marian suite consisting of Dawn In Sherwood and the End Title and also 'The Specialist suite consisting of 'Baogata-1984' and 'Did You Call Me'. Also special to hear 'If There Was A Man' ,'Into Miami' and 'Dawn Raid On Fort Knox'. However it was 'The James Bond Theme'that the audience really loved. No surprise then that it was the encore. John Barry only arranged the JB Theme, apparently. How do I know ? Michael Grade and Tommy Pearson stated it to the audience at seperate concerts over the last few days!. I could have done without the vocalists. Sad to hear Goldfinger reduced to a parody version by an overly dramatic Alison Jiear. You Only Live Twice was saved by some beautiful orchestral playing as was The Living Dayights, which included the Hercules Takeoff instrumental version. In fairness, Moonraker was better. The concert seemed to be playing to two constituencies, hard core fans, wanting some of Johns's lesser known themes and cues to be included, and more general music fans some of whom know John Barry's music mainly through the Bond songs. I was just relieved that we were allowed to hear the orchestral version of Born Free. Regardless of the vocalists, this was still a great night celebrating the music of John Barry.

Which concert did you see, Peter? The "Living Daylights" suite is a published one, that I have enjoyed growling my trumpet to (oo-er missus!!) several times... Royal Albert Hall on Friday evening.

Are there going to be any more Barry concerts in the South, or have I missed them all? That's all for now. There is a Barry concert scheduled for Nottingham in February.

This concert sounds like it was terrific. A really great program, too - marvelous variety in its assemblage (and any Barry concert that includes "Moonraker" is more than all right in my book). A strange question, but about how long did the concert run?
