That movie is about to be released. Newman`s music to the original trailer a couple of months ago was fantastic. And his score to Animals United from the same director was first rate as well. It actually has become one of my favorite Newman scores. I definetely hope, that there will be an album.
And I really hope that Newman returns someday. I have no idea what happened. Even Danny DeVito hired a different composer for his upcomming film. Maybe after turkeys like Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son and the direct to video features A Christmas Story 2 and Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster Newman got tired of scoring stupid comedies. And to be honest those scores weren`t exactly the biggest musical achievements.
IMDB can often be wrong... wait until the film is closer to release before you can be sure. I remember that IMDB listed Rolfe Kent as the composer of DUPLEX for a long time... a job he likely would have gotten had the original director, his frequent collaborator Mark Waters, not departed the production before shooting began. When DeVito took that movie over, David Newman came with him. I don't know anything about this upcoming movie, but it seems to me that it's too early to jump to conclusions.
btw, he played a fantastic cue from Tarzan during his demo session at the symposium in Vienna. What a great score... hopefully it will get released when the movie is out (last time I've heard it is getting delayed a bit).
Be thankful Tarzan was produced outside America!! It might sound symphonic now. It would have to be a Zimmer clone otherwise.
In that particular case, Production companies Constantin and Ambient worked with Mr Newman on Animals United four years ago, they were probably satisfied enough with his work to continue the collaboration.
Regarding the Zimmer clone "theory", I can give you an example : Frederic Talgorn has signed to score Dragon Hunters ("european" production) five years ago. He ended up not doing it and was replaced by Klaus Badelt.
There are some nods to the modern groove (some tracks reminded me a bit of Doyle's Apes score) but there's plenty of lovely David Newman choir and strings/horns moments that had me gagging to own this CD. The snippet of Jane & Dad (10) and Tarzan (11) are Totes!! T&J in the Lake sounds like another winner! This has become my most wanted CD of 2014. Hurry up 17th Feb!!
Wow, a David Newman album with almost 70 minutes of score. And the score seems to be absolutely wonderful. I already loved Newman`s trailer music for the original trailer (the later trailers didn`t seem to have Newman`s music). Unfortunately there didn`t seem to be majestic theme from the trailer in the samples. But maybe I`m wrong. And maybe the theme is in the score nonetheless. Anyway, the samples sound great. That`s the kind of filmmusic you don`t often hear in modern films anymore. And that`s the kind of music that really is the strength of Newman. Especially his fantastic string writing. After all he is the son of Alfred Newman who was the master of string writing And the performance by the Berlin Score Orchestra is fantastic as well. They already played Newman`s beautiful Animals United score wonderfully. Obviously Newman and the Berlin orchestra get along very well. And I am happily surprised that a David Newman score gets so many responses here
