That Elliot Goldenthal is dead and buried in a parking lot somewhere under three feet of asphalt [Laughs]. That Elliot Goldenthal doesn't exist anymore.

http://www.broadwayworld.com/off-broadway/article/BWW-Interview-Composer-Elliot-Goldenthal-Talks-A-MIDSUMMER-NIGHTS-DREAM-20131106

I saw his Midsummer Night's Dream opening night last Saturday. It was excellent and the NY Times and others had good things to say about the music. He talks about upcoming recording projects.

Scared me, too. :/

Excited for his new releases, though I wish the score arrangements performed in Poland were also getting released, especially the Alien 3 "Adagio" with choir.

I personally would start the thread out...

"ELLIOT GOLDENTHAL IS ALIVE AND WELL!"

But I guess that's just me.

It is quite jarring.

I was just thinking about him the other day and was going to google him and see what he was up to.

I wish him the best.

Yeah, I read about MIDSUMMER NIGHT on his facebook page. I sincerely hope it gets a recording and release.

So is it a ballet? Incidental music? A musical? It's pretty vague just what the piece is.

It's mostly incidental music - with some set pieces and since it's Shakespeare, there are a few songs as well.

A couple of the songs are done by the children's chorus or kid singers.

Goldenthal talks about MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM some more here, plus an interesting paragraph:

CTV: May I ask what you’re working on, what you’ve got coming up…?

EG: I’m pairing up my first string quartet, which I wrote this year, called The Stonecutters, based loosely on a poem by Robinson Jeffers, with some of my early chamber works from the 1970s, in a recording that’s being released within the next few weeks. And after that, I’m coming out with another recording. I’ve reduced my ballet Othello [commissioned by American Ballet Theatre] which is two hours and change, to a symphony…

CTV: A symphony!?

EG: Yes, to achieve symphonic purposes. Not a suite, not a narrative—a symphony. It’s 33 minutes long. Othello Symphony, I’m calling it. Liszt had a Faust Symphony, for example. And this way it can be programmed for a symphony hall, for symphony listening purposes. I recorded it in Krakow, Poland this past fall, so It’s coming out right after the chamber music album.

I greatly enjoyed his Othello ballet but ... man, is it weird for me to say I wish it was original material and not adapted?

I also wonder what happened to his GRENDEL recording which he told me so enthusiastically about in Krakow in 2012. That must have run into some problems.

"Next few weeks", eh? I'll believe it when I see it :/ No label announcements, preorders, nothing for any new Goldenthal anywhere, so...

True. I'll wait untill I hear it.

But I think Goldenthal is releasing it on his own label, Zarathustra Records, so I don't expect a massive PR campaign to begin with.

I love Othello, so a new reworked recording is fine for me. I mean, if Vaughn-Williams (Singonia Antarctica), Korngold (Violin Concerto), Prokofiev (Symphony No. 4), and Rota (Sinfonia Sopra Una Canzone D'Amore) can use incidental music (all film except Prokofiev's which is a ballet) for a formal symphonic work, then Goldenthal can do it too.

Goldenthal can do it too.

The man can do whatever he likes and I'll support him for it.

I just want more and new music from him, ya know?
