Goldenthal talks about MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM some more here, plus an interesting paragraph:
CTV: May I ask what you’re working on, what you’ve got coming up…?
EG: I’m pairing up my first string quartet, which I wrote this year, called The Stonecutters, based loosely on a poem by Robinson Jeffers, with some of my early chamber works from the 1970s, in a recording that’s being released within the next few weeks. And after that, I’m coming out with another recording. I’ve reduced my ballet Othello [commissioned by American Ballet Theatre] which is two hours and change, to a symphony…
CTV: A symphony!?
EG: Yes, to achieve symphonic purposes. Not a suite, not a narrative—a symphony. It’s 33 minutes long. Othello Symphony, I’m calling it. Liszt had a Faust Symphony, for example. And this way it can be programmed for a symphony hall, for symphony listening purposes. I recorded it in Krakow, Poland this past fall, so It’s coming out right after the chamber music album.
