I check their website everyday. I figure if there is going to be a club release before the end of the year,it would come in November. The last news post at their website is the same July 3 announcement.

Robert Townson is way too busy getting his picture taken with minor celebrities to worry about Club releases.

I feel that Varese has lost the plot ... so many other labels are releasing scores now , much better packaged than varese releases. I was hoping that some of Varese concerts with the GSPO would be released but no such luck.

Don't forget that Varese was sold to another company earlier this year, which may affect their modus operandi:

Last we heard "the storm is coming". If that is true expect a lot in 2014 and beyond...

The storm is coming was a reference to an upcoming concert. Nothing to do with cd releases.

Its probably time for Varèse to allow other labels access to their library of perpetuity.

I mean, why sit on it.
I think Varèse's current business model of hob-knobbing with living composers in the concert hall a wonderful situation.

Co-branded Varèse titles would kick ass...
and damn my wallet straight to hell!!!

Let Intrada do THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER instead of sitting on it for years and not releasing it.

This was my hope, too. For those who were not able to attend any of those concerts, they'd be wonderful releases. May still happen.

As noted above, the sale of Varese likely has changed some things. But it has seemed to me Varese may well be content to focus on new releases and the occasional batch of club titles . It isn't so much the torch had been passed, but for special editions and re-releases, other labels have pretty much eclipsed Varese in the last few years.

But VS still does produce some interesting new titles.

I wouldn't count Varese out when it comes to older titles. Sure, the market isn't even close to what it used to be in that what once sold a million copies now only sells a couple thousand, but I think it would be somewhat remiss not to bring in what money there is left to make on newer issues of these older scores they own album rights to.

P.S. Brass Target, The Whistle Blower, Crawlspace, Tourist Trap, April Fool's Day and an expanded RoboCop 3, please. wink

Varese might own several oft-requested titles in perpetuity but I've often wondered if the other labels have even tried working out a licensing deal. After all, Intrada, LLL, etc. deal with Sony, UMG, etc. Would dealing with Varese be that different?

If it were, labels would have done it before.

A few months ago MV suggested with words to the affect that maybe we should write Varese and all tell them they want other labels to be able to license out those in perpetuity titles.

And even then I imagine Varese will only let go of titles it feels aren't worth it and save the ones that are, for future CD Club titles.

Do we know for a fact that the tapes still exist? Seeing that Varese released pretty much all the other Goldsmith Universal scores from around the same period but not ADRIAN MESSENGER, we must consider the possibility that there are no tapes.

On the bright side, it means a bit of a break for collectors' wallets. And surely those fans (and in the case of Bruce Kimmel label owners) who complain about a glut on the market can't object to that.

Actually I am so busy with Intrada, Kritzerland and (especially) La La LandRecords releases, that I hardly care about Varese.

Also their latest Club releases were extremely disappointing for my personal taste.

Yes indeed, we have enough great labels including all the wonderful European ones to keep us busy and satisfied. Obviously, based on the evidence so far, these new people at Varese are not too concerned at providing a decent pr system for the potential customers or engendering goodwill, so be it, it's their loss.

I'd be fine with that smile

Those are exactly the ones I'm concerned about - titles that Townson personally feels aren't worth expanding, and yet won't let another label have a stab at.

At the height of club production, they do about 1/4 of the releases that Intrada/LLL do (average of one per month). At 12 per year, that's enough for the most highly requested titles.

And once again, we find the board is split between two types:

Those interested in the art of film score

And those interested only in their own wants and complaints.
