News has been coming through for a few hours now about the missile destruction of a Malaysian airlines Boeing 777 airliner with 295 people on board. The plane was shot down over Ukraine and there were 154 Dutch citizen, 27 Australians and a mixture of Malaysian, Indonesian, German and other nationalities. The Dutch seem to have suffered the heaviest losses and we in Australia are horrified about this disaster and can only feel empathy for their families.

This is just terrible and initial reports are that it MAY have been Russian separatists in the Ukraine who are responsible. As an Australian I feel absolutely outraged.

It's time for serious sanctions against Russia because of its actions in the Ukraine, and for its material support for separatists. A good place for everyone to start is to boycott Russian altogether if one is a tourist.

The words to boycott all of Russia in the 21st century sounds more frightening then the crime itself.

TO THOMAS-I am confuse by your comments? You are saying we should take drastic action against Russia, after the world pump God knows how much money into Russia's economy with the Olympics.Yes there has been a modification of statement, but I am saying the same thing in one sentence. First off who knows maybe this was something against the Malaysian government. Are the leaders of Malaysian more moral men then the leaders of Russia. Hey that would be a eternal conversation with millions who live in Malaysia.

No I didn't. Your original post stated to take 'drastic action against Russia'. I was disagreeing with that before you changed it, for whatever reason. We should wait for the international investigation that will follow and for cooler heads to prevail.

I never said we should take action against Russia at all, The man who started this thread said take action against Russia, are you dreaming. I said whatever one does don't live a double standard. I used the Olympics as an example of why taking action against Russia makes little sense.REGIE is the one steaming here. I am not.

Whatever, dan the man. One would wonder why you drastically edited the post, even in that fantasy world of yours.

The plane was shot down over Ukraine airspace and that country is engaged in a civil war with Russia, who has annexed part of the country. Back to the bad old days of the Soviet empire.

Because of this we should boycott Russia - because of their aggression and possibly now because they MIGHT be implicated in this disaster with the loss of civilian lives in a commercial jet liner.

And I don't read a lot of sympathy for the victims and their families. That's sad in itself.

Many of these were Australians and I'm personally very angry indeed.

On another note - this messageboard is growing increasingly slow to use and impossible for posting. With that, I'm now leaving Film Score Monthly messageboard.

Regie,

My heart is aching for the victims and their families. To even bring up the Olympics in this discussion is heartless and utter nonsense. Please keep all the victims in your prayers.

Nonsense? no, wisdom, my friend, I know people very well in Russia who are members of the Russian orthodox church. They should have to lose their livelihoods and jobs, because of the ravings of the logic of a person like REGIE.Tourist boycott and all that.Believed me if we should pray then let us pray for the victims of illogical thoughts from a character like Regie, TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT. I am finish.

dan, I used to enjoy your posts when they were light-hearted and sometimes silly. I defended you at times. Now I have grown tired of your rambling and baiting comments and am no longer going to even respond. I think you work overtime at pissing people off and I don't have time for that. There is enough in the real world to piss me off. I come here to learn and share, not to have my brain scrambled. Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing but so is the freedom to choose.

dan, you said, "The words to boycott all of Russia in the 21st Century seems more frightening then the crime itself." Is this a joke? First of all Regie is female, not male. She is not illogical, and if you read her first post, she refers to boycotting if you are a "tourist." I doubt if that would ruin Russia's economy if tourists avoided Russia. Moreover, and most importantly, not touring Russia for a while seems trivial when compared to the DEATHS of 295 totally innocent people. This is a horrible tragedy, and the Olympics reference doesn't make sense. Talk about illogical.

I agree we don't have all the information. We need more information and clarity to really understand what happened.

Regie, I know the board is slow, but I hope you stick around. You and edwzoomom are breaths of fresh air. I always read both of these ladies' posts. Don't leave.

Thanks Joan and Octoberman! I'm nervous with technology at best so it easily rattles me when the board slows down.

The number of Dutch citizens who have died has now gone up to 174 and this is disasterous, especially for a reasonably small nation. These are a wonderful people - innovative, friendly, intelligent, liberal-minded and welcoming - and many AIDS researchers/scientists on their way to a conference in Melbourne have been also killed in this tragedy - some of them pioneers and leaders in the field.

We in Australia grieve for one family in particular who lost the grandfather and 3 children - the eldest 12 years of age - from Perth, Western Australia. Only contemplate what it must be like to lose your father and 3 of your children in one disaster. My head cannot get around this.

Thank you so much to the good people on this board who have offered their consolations. It means a lot.

Concerning this aspect in particular, it's certainly been an annoyance for everyone here for some months now. But I must emphasize that it really is only an annoyance.
Sure, everyone gets impatient when the electronics seem frozen... I'm certainly no exception, but the good of this board still makes it worth the annoyance.
I always remember that I need to click the post button only once--the program will eventually catch up with whatever commands we feed into it.

(My Missus, conversely, is utterly convinced that hitting a key 50 times will make the PC work faster. Then she comes shrieking to me because it locked up! big grin)

Regarding the 777--when I think of what those people experienced and what their surviving friends and family are now going through... it's gut-churning.

"dan the man" has expressed irrational and downright cold-blooded views on previous tragedies, as he did in the now-locked "Hillsborough" thread:

It's jsut been announced that two of the Britons on the aircraft were Newcastle United fans flying out to follow their team's pre-season games. How innocent adventure can change to tragedy. Puts tech glitches into perspective.
