It didn't annoy me. I've yet to see a Coen film that I like.

In my opinion, the Coens have been the top directors for many years now. It's heresy to criticize them!

I love “Fargo” -- not a huge fan of most of the other films, though they always strike me as unique and provocative. “Raising Arizona” has some great moments -- especially the ending.
The guy who wrote the article seems rattled by a lot of things that most probably have nothing to do with the Coen brothers.
Also I do find it darkly comic that he intros his piece with a broadside against the French critics and their development of what came to be known as the Auteur Theory – but then spends his entire article presenting us with his own example of auteur film criticism.
Axes to grind. Publish or perish. Find an easily recognizable target and pounce. Polemics not analysis or insight.

Am I the only guy on the planet that likes "Raising Arizona"? Sometimes it seems like it....
Absolutely not! It is my 2nd favorite "rom-com" and, believe me, as a man it vexes me no end just having to type that word (my #1 favorite being "LA Story").
I love it, always have. I force my lady to watch it with me 
The Coens are hot and cold with me. Things like Blood Simple or Arizona clicked with me immediately, some, like Lebowski, took me some years' distance to appreciate. Some, Barton Fink, just aren't my cup of tea at all. The well received No Country For Old Men still is problematic for me. Some scenes are downright chilling, but overall it didn't thrill me.
That article however, was pretty much pot and kettle as far as smug goes though

I think you've absolutely nailed it here!!
Disappointing to read so much antipathy towards the Coens on these boards. I don't say I enjoy all the films, but I love that quirky, iconoclastic sense of humour.
And I believe "The Man Who Wasn't There" is one of the finest films ever made. It is luminous in acting, production values/design, script and direction - and that monochromatic photography by Roger Deakins is glorious. That Coen sense of humour is everywhere in abundance, but often not easy to spot; a gesture here, a comment there, an image cleverly taken; a line subtly delivered... And it held my attention from the opening titles and the transcendent music of Beethoven from the "Archduke" Trio. Even then, I feel the Coens were using that Trio thematically and metaphorically!!

I enjoy watching Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading and The Big Lebowski much more than I enjoy reading someone telling me that I shouldn't enjoy them.

Well, let me add I didn't even bother clicking on the link to read the article.
I just volunteered my opinion of the Coen Bros films willy nilly.
I must add I think I laughed a few times watching Raising Arizona, especially the bit were all the toddlers are crawling about and escaping.
I think my main problem is I have a low threshold for films populated by mainly dense or stupid people and their films are full of them.
