I know a number of nuns, and have worked with many in the Catholic college I used to work at. One of them is a very good friend, she was always supportive of me. None of them wore the traditional habit. In fact, they now believe that (under Vatican II, I think) that wearing the cross of their particular order constitutes "wearing" their habit.
My one friend when I knew her early on, I tended to call her "Sister Annette." One day, she was heading out the door and I called her that; she came back in and in a very mock-stern voice said "Greg? Would you like me to start calling you Mr. Bryant?" (I wasn't a Dr. yet). I said "No." She said, "Then please call me Annette." We laughed over that, and have been very good friends ever since.
FYI, I'm Protestant.

Yes, I too met a nun once. At Di Vinci airport in Rome. I was a pre-teen, and seeing the dirty looks she gave me from her sour puss somewhat inhibited any glad conversation...
Actually I saw a LOT of nuns in that airport- all over Rome, really... I was in a nest of them.

What is there to top? I'm under the strong impression that Catholic clergy and their adjutants are simpatico with left-leaning causes today. It's also a matter of utterly banal, common knowledge that a disproportionate percentage of religious "celebates" are gay. Some of them are sincerely celibate and some use the calling as a cover. I'm not letting any secrets out here.

I used to live next door to a convent. A few times a storm would knock out their phone line and one of them would come over to our house to use our phone. My kindergarten class was in that convent and all I had to do was walk next door to go to school.
I attended Catholic school till 3rd grade, and I remember one really cruel punishment a nun gave to a girl in my class who was caught chewing gum. The nun/teacher made this girl stick the gum on her nose and stand in front of the class like that till the class period was over. The girl was an emotional wreck. This would have been in the early 1970's and I'm sure if a teacher did something like this to a student today, the school would get sued for inflicting emotional distress.
Do you remember the dirty looks I mentioned earlier? Same thing. Thank God I never truly had to deal with them, let ALONE walk amongst them.
