Let me see which of his movies I have seen... The Great Escape It's one of those movies I watched a lot as a kid-- not just for garner, as there are several great characters/actors, but "Scrounger" Hendley was one of those I preferred. Duel at Diablo I have it on DVD, but have not watched it yet. Support Your Local Sheriff! I watched the DVD a few weeks ago. Garner makes the movie; it's a relatively good little comedy western, but more in the "okay" than "great" category. The red line in the jail (with a red blotch!) has to be one of the very best moments, if not the best one. Victor Victoria An excellent comedy! Hilarious. Great songs, too. Maverick (1994) I saw it on TV several years ago and wish they would release a SE DVD; I don't remember that much, but it was pretty funny. Space Cowboys Another good one. Atlantis: The Lost Empire Darnit, I didn't even know he did one of the voices; I'll have to watch it again soon. Roughing It I have not watched the DVD yet, but I love Broughton's score; it's easily one of my top favorite scores of his. I have never seen any episode of The Rockford Files. That's a lot of comedies I have featuring him: how representative is it? Garner is a great one for comedy, indeed (comedy with a certain deadpan class in his attitude, that is); even as Scrounger he is not too serious; he always has this slightly detached and amused attitude, a twinkle in the eye. A very likeable actor.

A superb actor ... one of my favourites (defined as being: I'll watch a film because of the actor) and I can't think of a performance which left me thinking I wish another actor had taken the role. I think he was wonderful in films like Move Over, Darling, Duel At Diablo, The Americanisation Of Emily, Hour Of The Gun, Grand Prix and Support Your Local Sheriff! but the list carries on. I recently watched him, as a much older man, in One Special Night ... his re-teaming with the lovely Julie Andrews was wonderful. And his lead role in Decoration Day with Bill Cobbs resulted in one of the best TV movies ever. He was great with Bruce Willis in Sunset and his smaller roles in films like Maverick help an entertaining film become memorable. Perhaps he never quite got the A-list roles taken by the likes of Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery but I'm usually much happier (some exceptions, of course) watching a film starring James Garner than any of those big stars.
