It was my favourite western series from the old days and my childhood. We have our shows at the historic Lafayette Theatre (vintage 1924) in Suffern, NY (about 50 minutes west of Manhattan). The classic shows are Saturday morning at 11:30am, the fall season starts on 9/6 with the aforementioned Sand Pebbles. I'm still waiting for studio confirmation on three dates, but others showing this season are 12 Angry Men, Born Yesterday, The Bedford incident, A Man for All Seasons (a gorgeous Technicolor print), The Big Heat, The 39 Steps, Holiday Inn, The Grapes of Wrath, It's a Wonderful Life, and others. This was certainly a step aside in his career but a really worth one. I'd recommend you watch him in Magnificent Seven which first highlighted his "coolness." Then watch The Great Escape. I think his finest acting was in The Sand Pebbles. But I also have a deep love of this film - partly due to the participation of two personal, perennially underrated favorites, Dalton Trumbo and Franklin J. Schaffner. McQueen as klutz driver ain't one of 'em, tho; the audience knows it takes someone really accomplished - as he unabashedly was - to try and appear the clumsy opposite; however, the elevated subway chase/stunt sequence is worth the price of vision all by itself. And it's indisputable the final sequence leaves us with just about the most thoroughly unexpected - and WARMEST - image of him (no, that ain't it) utterly alien to the rest of his remarkable career.
