"We lost. We always lose."

His monumental dysfunctions, epic irresponsibility, spectacularly selfish persona and prodigious pain-in-the-ass he was aside, there's no denying - on screen - he was a Magnificent winner.

And there'll ne'er be another species like him ...

Timely post, Neo. We're opening our Fall season of classic films on September 6 with "The Sand Pebbles"; the Fox archive is providing me with a new 35mm print with a Dolby SR stereo soundtrack.

Timely in more ways than one, Pete.

WHERE R U, ANYWAY?

We'd love to mosey over - Jersey, is it? - and catch some of your enterprising programs; they sound quite enticing. Is there an e-mail or web-site?

Best from The Seven ... wink

Hello Neo,

I bought in 2008 the three seasons of "Wanted: Dead or Alive".
It was my favourite western series from the old days and my childhood.

I like McQueen's performances in the two Sam Peckinpah's films: "Junior Bonner" and "The Getaway" that I also own on DVD--really recommended!

Yer right as sunny rain, Stef, appreciate the observant update on the under-oversight on our part.

"Junior Bonner" is as atypical McQueen as one can get ("Enemy of the People" thankfully aside)

yet well-worth watchin' ... smile

Hi, Neo.

We have our shows at the historic Lafayette Theatre (vintage 1924) in Suffern, NY (about 50 minutes west of Manhattan). The classic shows are Saturday morning at 11:30am, the fall season starts on 9/6 with the aforementioned Sand Pebbles. I'm still waiting for studio confirmation on three dates, but others showing this season are 12 Angry Men, Born Yesterday, The Bedford incident, A Man for All Seasons (a gorgeous Technicolor print), The Big Heat, The 39 Steps, Holiday Inn, The Grapes of Wrath, It's a Wonderful Life, and others. Website is here, though the schedule is not there yet as I need those remaining confirmations: www.bigscreenclassics.com/indexlafayette.htm

Hope to see you!

Neo, once again you've done the right thing.

McQueen is a legend.

Is there any wonder why this man has such a striking resemblance to him?

. . . particularly in Munich.

Steve McQueen was Harrison Ford before Harrison Ford. Love his stuff, love his movies.

As I pointed few days ago on a Rosenman tribute thread (without receiving any response), McQueen produced and starred in an adaptation of Ibsen's AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE in 1978 (Rosenman wrote the sublime music score). This was certainly a step aside in his career but a really worth one. A shame how little publicity the film received theatrically (as detailed on IMDB).

I never quite got what the fuss was about this actor. My friends are car buffs and naturally worship Mcqueen, but honestly, I don't get it.

I can only remember seeing him in Papillon... Which movie would you recommend me to see to convince me otherwise?

He was the King Of Cool!! I'd recommend you watch him in Magnificent Seven which first highlighted his "coolness." Then watch The Great Escape. I think his finest acting was in The Sand Pebbles.

And all three of the above movies have great scores by Bernstein and Goldsmith.

During my endless movie-going days in the 1960s, he was my favorite actor, by a mile. He remains among my favorites, to this day. I'd love a DVD release of Baby the Rain Must Fall!

Sarge has never-ending admiration for the classic McQueen films - MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, GREAT ESCAPE, SAND PEBBLES...

But I also have a deep love of this film - partly due to the participation of two personal, perennially underrated favorites, Dalton Trumbo and Franklin J. Schaffner.

And I also have an inexplicable love of this film -

Hell, I even enjoy THE HUNTER!

We Agree with Ya, Phil Department:

has its attractions. McQueen as klutz driver ain't one of 'em, tho; the audience knows it takes someone really accomplished - as he unabashedly was - to try and appear the clumsy opposite;

however, the elevated subway chase/stunt sequence is worth the price of vision all by itself.

And it's indisputable the final sequence leaves us with just about the most thoroughly unexpected - and WARMEST - image of him (no, that ain't it)

utterly alien to the rest of his remarkable career.

(Nah, the above ain't it, either) ... wink

This scene -

Never fails to amuse me. It's not only a top notch fight scene, McQueen's reactions to his towering (no pun intended) opponent are hilarious.

If anyone wants a taste, here's the trailer -
