Great film, if depresing. One of Mitchum's best performances as a truly unlikable schlub.

On order, buddy boy, and I expect this great Neo Noir on June 11, 2009. Top Music by Dave Grusin!

To quote Roger Ebert, "No good movie is depressing. All bad movies are depressing. I am elated at the end of a great tragedy and depressed at the end of a bad comedy."

I agree, though, that COYLE is excellent and Mitchum is excellent in it.

This is a film I was too callow to appreciate in 1973, expecting more of a Yates BULLITT-type thriller, but, as the years went by, I came to enjoy it's mood and character qualities. The Grusin score was always excellent though.

I'm looking forward to seeing this again in the new Criterion iteration.

Read this review from DVD Times:
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content/id/70767/the-friends-of-eddie-coyle.html

PS: I will correct this statement from the review:
"Someone can correct me if this is wrong, but I don't believe The Friends of Eddie Coyle has been previously released on DVD anywhere in the world or even on VHS".

I used to rent a VHS back in the 1980's.

"They put your hand in a drawer... then somebody kicks the drawer shut.
Ever hear bones breaking? Just like a man snapping a shingle.
Hurts like a bastard".
—Eddie Coyle to Jackie Brown.

Good move, man. The film is character-driven with a fine urban jazz funk score by Dave Grusin.
The cast is very good. The Boston locations remind me "The Departed".
Today, I watched the commentary by Peter Yates that is both informative and amusing.
And keep in mind that: "Hurt like a bastard".

What a delightfully drab film!

That remark is intended with the highest praise.

I haven't sprung for the Criterion yet as it's light on extras but it is a supoib movie, no doubt. There's no one around like Mitchum--heck, there are no more Richard Jordan types, either! frown

What was it about early '70s cinema that was so damned gritty and rank? Those movies (and TV shows) made such an impression on me as a kid back then--though given my age at the time, movies were more of a peripheral influence--and many of these films retain their power today.
