Great film, if depresing. One of Mitchum's best performances as a truly unlikable schlub.

This is a film I was too callow to appreciate in 1973, expecting more of a Yates BULLITT-type thriller, but, as the years went by, I came to enjoy it's mood and character qualities. The Grusin score was always excellent though. I'm looking forward to seeing this again in the new Criterion iteration.

Well, I finally took the plunge and ordered this on Amazon a few minutes ago. Good move, man. The film is character-driven with a fine urban jazz funk score by Dave Grusin. The cast is very good. The Boston locations remind me "The Departed". Today, I watched the commentary by Peter Yates that is both informative and amusing. And keep in mind that: "Hurt like a bastard".
