Long before C.H.I.P.S. and KCBS Helicopter chases, there was the Ziv Television series HIGHWAY PATROL. Yesterday I got the new MGM DVD set of Season 1. Gorgeous transfers from the camera negatives. Lots of great 50's B-players like Paul Byars, William "Adam 12" Boyett, Gene Roth, Guy Williams, Bing Russell, Richard "Seaview" Bull, Dennis Moore and many others. And, of course, good old Brod Crawford tough as nails. A great early procedural police show looking great after 55 years! 10-FOUR!

The sound editor for "Highway Patrol" was none other than Quinn Martin! Quinn Martin really got his big break working for Desilu on THE UNTOUCHABLES.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Until, of all things, Knots Landing came along in the late 70s, Highway Patrol was my favorite television show, ever! I just spent all my birthday money on Thriller, Rich Man Poor Man, Dark Night of the Scarecrow and Seasons 1 and 2 of Jake and the Fatman. Had I known this was out...Perhaps I'll get more money, by the time Sunday rolls around.

Complete episodes can be watched online at THIS channel's website, courtesy of hulu: http://dc.thistv.com/view/series/2373/Highway%20Patrol Oh, I do get this channel. That's what Tivo is for! Thanks.

By the way - have any of you HP fans ever seen the anti-Highway Patrol film with Brod? BIG HOUSE U.S.A. It is NASTY!!! Oh, how I remember that film! It had a great cast (Crawford, Ralph Meeker, Lon Chaney Jr., Charles Bronson, William Talman, Reed Hadley). For once you get to see Dan Matthews with Mike Hammer, Larry Talbot, Paul Kersey, and Hamilton Burger breaking out of prison. Certainly one of the greats, and has a distinctive score by Paul Dunlap.

I watched an episode, today. Just as great as I remembered it! So happy to rediscover this show.

It seems to me that "Highway Patrol" went through its entire run with only two music cues: the Main Title theme and the intro/suspense theme that was used when the show returned from commercial (and which was occasionally reprised at various points during the episode). The four-note opening phrase of the Main Title was also used as a "stinger' from time to time.
