This Royal baby reminds me of a book I borrowed from my local library....It's overdue and I'm going to have to pay for it!

As a Republican through and through I have always laughed at how pro-Royalists always seem to defend the existence of the monarchy by citing that age old rhetoric about how they "bring in a lot of tourists".

Well, a bunch of folk dressed as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy et al bring in a lot of tourists to Florida and California. So that surely is the compromise? Do away with the Windsors but get a bunch of unemployed actors to dress up as them!

I'd keep Prince Phillip though - he is entertaining and worth the amount of tax I am forced to spend to prop up his lifestyle. As to the rest of them, well let's just say I think Cromwell had the right idea!

yeah, funny thing is that news about Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck, or almost any cartoon character, would be more interesting to me than news about the so called "royal family.

I have never understood why American media salivates and spends so much attention on this pointless vestige of a country that we abandoned as an oppressor. Now all it takes is one of them doing anything at all, and it is all over the news.

I do not care about the royal family, or the birth of that baby.

The American media is all over this stuff because Americans (mostly women) are all over this stuff. Working today I actually had a woman come across the store to tell me the baby's name. Like I needed to know this asap. lol.

Later on today I heard four or five of them droning on and on about the new royal, and how about Fergie and it's so terrible about Diana, and the baby has more hair than his father, and on, and on, and on, and on.......

Then again who do Americans have to compare. Donald I'm-as-smart-as-my-toupe Trump? Kim I'm-famous-because-well-I'm-famous Kardashian?

Hmmmm. Those royals are starting to sound better all of a sudden!

I just love how William and Kate are the lucky inheritors of generations of hate just for being part of the families into which they were born. Like, what, as soon as they are old enough to perceive the public resentment towards their heritage they should just walk away from who they are?

It's a new baby and that's a happy day for anyone, so shaddup already.

Exactly it's just another baby. So why should it get any more attention than any other baby? Because it was born into wealth and power? That is significant how? So yes, shudup already. wink

As a parent, I don't refer to new babies in such a nonchalant manner. As to why it's getting such attention, you'd have to take that up with the media that's giving it all the attention. It certainly was not me that started this thread either. My comment was how the baby and his parents are reviled in some quarters just for being who they are. Yes it was born into wealth and power. There's no reason to be disparaging about that aspect until it is seen what he will do with said wealth and power. Don't ask me about the significance of it because I didn't say that it was.

I am not a big fan of any royals, but neither do I believe in ragging on someone who's never done me any wrong. I don't think you were ragging as such, so there was no reason for you to think the "shaddup already" was directed at you. Only at the haters.

Gotcha. No I am not ragging on the baby or the parents. All children are precious. It's all the ridiculous media attention, and the abnormal admiration from the masses of one child over another.

It's important because it will be part of history in 400 years time. If you don't know who Henry VIII was married to, and how his children (Henry the 9th and then the 10th) came to power, you are extremely ignorant of British history and the shaping of its culture. So if in 400 years time people don't know that Harry and Katy had a Boy George, then they will be deemed nincompoops.

I don't know anything about that stuff and don't give a hoot. I don't care if I'm a nincompoop because of my ignorance. I think you are joking about Henry the 9th and 10th. Not sure though.

As for the current lot, I mean - what's the attraction? I genuinely can't find or feign the slightest scintilla of interest in the Royal Family.

Still, if it keeps the tourists coming ...

Everyone saw those little fingers sort of waving over the edge of his blanket, but did you notice that the little imp shot the finger at everybody? I haven't seen any of the talk shows pick up on that (thought sure Jon Stewart would catch it) but there it was, clear as day for all the world to see, if they were paying attention.

I think I'm going to like this kid.
