My alltime favourite actor -- I've seen every one of his movies except THUNDER ISLAND (1963), which I've been unable to find to an affordable price.
But....he hasn't been in anything since the brief role in HOW DO YOU KNOW (2010). And he's only done 7 movies in the 2000's. He is not listed with any new project anywhere that I've been able to find.
And yet -- no official announcement on retirement or anything like it.
What gives? Is he just slipping silently into retirement?

Interesting, but perhaps pointless fact:
Sibelius retired at a very modest age, and while his last significant music was written in the 1920s when he was around sixty years of age, he lived to hear Elvis Presley. His "retirement" is said to have been alcohol-related (by a very old lady we met at the Proms one year, who told us she knew him when she was a girl).

Yeah, but both of those have publically announced their retirement. No such thing from Nicholson.
Incidentally, today at the book store I saw what looked like a special issue of Life devoted exclusively to Jack Nicholson. I didn't pick it up to look through it, but all it had on the cover was a picture of him and his name in large print, so it appeared to be some kind of special edition. Most likely a career retrospective.

Nah, I'd still rather watch him over anyone else. He was terrific in 42, and looks great in the ads for Paranoia playing a shadier character than he usually does. He's still got the goods.

Did it contain a recent interview? If so, I'd be curious to know if he comments on his current 'status' as far as retirement is concerned.

I guess. But it has always seemed to me that even those who at some point withdraw from the limelight keep doing minor things in private. J.D. Salinger is a good example -- he retired from professional writing early on, but still kept writing unpublished material to his death.
For actors, it's a bit more difficult, though. I'm not sure Connery or Hackman or whoever are still doing acting gigs in 'private' -- it's a profession that by definition requires a public to exist.
I wondered about Nicholson myself, and really the guy could just retire and enjoy it, after an amazingly successful career, unless he he is being selective in his work, and still enjoys working.
And just a month after I posted this thread, here it is -- the sad confirmation that it's true. Nicholson has quietly retired from acting, probably due to memory issues:
