I don't think I've ever been to a cinema with balconies.

Theatres and concert halls, yes, but not cinemas. Guess they weren't that common over here.

In continental Europe, many concert halls are actually "multi-purpose", used for classical, pop, opera, ballet - of the many I've visited most have balconies. And yes, I prefer to sit there, for acoustic reasons. The sound tends to be more open than when you're sitting in the stalls.

We used to call it "the circle" in the UK, or "el gallinero" (the henhouse!) here in Spain. The front row was my favourite place. The screen was at about eye-level, so I didn't have to crane my neck up as I had to do in the front row of the stalls. Also, no people in front blocking the view with tall hair or large heads. I used to sometimes sit forward and lean on the rail with my arms. Good place also for the naughty kids to drop objects onto the punters below.

The last local cinema that had that set-up was demolished about 15 years ago.

I used to sit in the balcony all the time when such things were commonplace in the cinema. In fact, there was one particular seat at the ABC Haymarket in Newcastle right at the front of the circle that I occupied at least weekly during the school holidays, and was hugely resentful when some other punter wrongfully plonked himself down in it.

The last time was the Coliseum, Porthmadog, where we took the kids a few years ago to escape torrential rain and catch up with the new Harry Potter. We sat front row, circle, and tried not to drip on the stalls. Sadly, it's now closed down for lack of funds...

If I ever win the lottery jackpot, I swear I'll get it up and running again.

I only remember one or two theaters with balcony's. I think they were phasing out by the early 70's.

Yup, the circle. When I was growing up in North London all cinemas had them, it used to cost a little bit more as I remenber. I was always in the stalls, but as I got older I started using the circle more. My favorite circle was in the Odeon Westbourne Grove (my favorite cinema), it was quite plush up there, with padded arm-rests, all in a rich red. Will anyone remember multi-plexs with the same nostalgia?

When I was a kid the Balcony was verboten. It was for adults and smokers. Kids couldn't even sit in the center of the Orchestra- we had to sit off to the side. Of course we used to try and sneak around and sit crouched low in the seats so the ushers wouldn't see us, but they usually did, threatening us with reports to the Franciscan Brothers they somehow knew were our teachers at school.

So whenever I was taken to the movies, I always begged to sit up in the Balcony. I remember when my older brother took me to see Spartacus we sat in the very first row of the Balcony, known then as the Loge. And those were priced slightly higher than regular priced seats. Then again, my brothers smoked in those days.

You have all forgotten the true import of the darkened balcony and its intended purpose…..

I'm just a-sitting in the balcony
Just watching the movie
Or maybe it's a symphony
I wouldn't know

I don't care about the symphonies
The cymbals and the timpanis
Just a-sitting in the balcony
On the very last row

I'll hold your hand
And I'll kiss you too
The feature's over
But we're not through

Just sitting the balcony
Holding hands in the balcony
Just a-sitting in the balcony
On the very last row

We may stop loving
To watch Bugs Bunny
But he can't take the
Place of my honey

Just sitting in the balcony
Just a-smooching in the balcony
Just a-sitting in the balcony
On the very last row

Just a-hugging and a-kissing
My baby in the very last row
-Eddie Cochran -1957

Last time was in Denver, downtown some place, cannot recall the name of the cinema, it was really old and great. I recall watching the original Solaris, and people were smoking. It was a powerful experience, it was like returning to the womb or something, intoxicating.

Yes, the balcony. In the 80s my brother and I used to go to our local cinema (RIP) and always have seats in the first row, middle, on the balcony. That meant we were exactly opposite the center of the big screen. Of course we would wait till the credits finished, and if we liked the film then buy tickets for the very next show. The projectionist would greet us as old acquaintances.

Sadly since the introduction of the multiplexes, theaters with balconies seem to have disappeared altogether.

Sometimes.

Balconies were awesome. Especially in the older theaters that had really fancy, ornate interiors.

Oh, yeah, front center circle if I got there first, or if I could afford assigned seating in the West End. It is astronomically expensive to sit in the balcony in the Odeon Leicester Square. They call it the Royal Circle, and these days one adult, peak period = £22.50 (€26/$35).

When I was growing up, my local fleapit used to have a circle but they ruined the experience in the mid 1970s when they turned downstairs into two smaller screens, retaining the balcony as their main theatre. This meant if you sat in the main theatre after the conversion, you were up in the circle looking down on the cavernous remains of the stalls. And to make matters worse, the backside of Screen Two, beneath you, jutted into view on the left. Acoustics were all shot, too, so it was a shame. In 1999 they closed it down and turned it into a nightclub where people get stabbed.

Lee Tracy was a balcony viewer.....

....and that's not all he did on a balcony! smile

Wow, Ray! I doubt if 5 readers here will get this arcane
80-year-old reference!

Years ago I personally knew a key crew member who was there
and saw it when it happened, but says it was not as legend has it.

Not really a balcony, but the upper level of the Cinerama Dome at the Arclight Theater in Hollywood has a great sweet spot in the first row middle.

Elysium was a knockout there.

Never been to a theater with a balcony.

That song makes me laugh because I always heard about how people go to the movies to just make out with someone. It just makes zero sense to me. Why waste your money on a movie if you don't care to watch it. I guess that explains why stupid movies become date movies.
