Well no, but he is cast as Ultron, the new villain in the Avengers sequel.

Now I will say that I found the first Avengers movie aside from the score a shitty movie with a lot of explosions and destruction in the third act but never did I feel involved in it; The villain Loki, or low key, was plain bad and hardly menacing or convincing as a villain. With James Spader involved, it might get interesting as I found Kevin Bacon (and I think both actors are comparable in range) very well cast in X-men First Class.

Big fan of Spader and look forward to seeing him take on the part!

I loved The Avengers, and I can't disagree with you more. Judging from the movie's reception, the overwhelming majority of viewers feel the same.

That said, if you're depending solely upon James Spader to save the sequel for you I think you're going to be disappointed. While the villains are crucial, they're just a part of these movies; the heroes, their rapport, etc. are all much more important, and where most of the focus will lie with any of them, so if you really couldn't enjoy them the first time around I don't know why you would the second.

That said, I, too, am looking forward to the addition of James Spader to the cast. I'm sure he'll be great!

Well I should have clarified that I did enjoy the separate movies that featured all of the heroes and led up to Avengers a lot more than Avengers itself, which had zero chemistry between those heroes and had a plot basically reminiscent of a Transformers movie. So I was disappointed with what Avengers became and I think the reason why it's such a huge success has to do with it riding on the coattails of the individual movies which are much much better. And lets be honest, it starred Robert Downey. Aside from featuring the heroes, Avengers was messy.

Regarding the villain just being part of the movie, I disagree; these are movies based on comic books; if the threat isn't there, in the case of Avengers you're basically seeing a reunion movie with lots of CGI and effects. If that's what you want to see, good for you, but I want to see real conflict and not a multiplayer videogame. The X-men movies are a perfect example of this formula working, superheroes with their unique strenghts working together and guess what, they did have great villains throughout.
