MONDAY, OCTOBER 7

GRAVITY---astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, head of the Hayden Planetarium, criticized some scientific aspects of the Sandra Bullock movie:

1. “Mysteries of #Gravity: Why Bullock, a medical Doctor, is servicing the Hubble Space Telescope.”
2. “Mysteries of #Gravity: How Hubble (350mi up) ISS (230mi up) & a Chinese Space Station are all in sight lines of one another.”
3. Mysteries of #Gravity: When Clooney releases Bullock’s tether, he drifts away. In zero-G a single tug brings them together.”
4. “Mysteries of #Gravity: Why Bullock’s hair, in otherwise convincing zero-G scenes, did not float freely on her head.”
5. "Mysteries of #Gravity: Nearly all satellites orbit Earth west to east yet all satellite debris portrayed orbited east to west."
6. "Mysteries of #Gravity:: Satellite communications were disrupted at 230 mi up, but communications satellites orbit 100x higher."
7. "Mysteries of #Gravity: Astronaut Clooney informs medical doctor Bullock what happens medically during oxygen deprivation."

Good to hear. I enjoyed his appearance in the first episode of season 2, and thought he had good chemistry with Miller and Liu.

Or she could move into TV, which is much more forgiving.

I'll throw a mystery of Gravity into the mix:

Shouldn't one of the main things you learn in training when running low on oxygen is to conserve it? Clooney's character shouldn't have asked her where home was, but instead said: "Shut up, you're burning oxygen."

I think that the Dr had some good points there. He is totally correct about 2001 also. It just grates on my never when they say Gravity is better than anything, better than 2001. Cuaron is a nice guy, and a good director, but Kubrick was an immense talent, and 2001 is unlike anything ever made or ever will be made. I further think that the static shots in 2001 better serve the sense of desolation and immersion in space than cameras spinning around on gimbels.

Hahahaha. You're not the sexiest anything if you can't deliver your lines without sounding like you've never spoken the language before.

I have a physics degree and I couldn't give two shits about how scientifically accurate Gravity is. What a waste of time from Tyson.

You might not care but he does. He apparently holds science in more importance than you, and applies it to entertainment, whereas you are not concerned with it. I would not say there is anything wrong with him making these remarks, he is educating the public.

Educating the public in the same way that the people who complain about the historical inaccuracies in costume dramas are educating the public. I don't think it's any secret that movies are fictions and that facts are very often fudged for the sake of drama.

When did that happen?! Was it hidden by Drax's cloaking device? eek

It never ceases to amaze me how so many smart people can't just turn their brains off and go along for the ride in movies. Instead, it seems like they take great pride in being able to pick everything apart.

Newsflash: it's SCIENCE FICTION, not a documentary (aka SCIENCE FACT). Cuarón admitted before release that he took liberties with how things actually are in order to tell a story. Because of that fact, it's a waste of time for people like Tyson to feel the need to "fact check" something admitted to be fiction.

I've never thrown in with Neil deGrasse Tyson, largely because of the Internet cult that surrounds him - which he is most definitely pandering to in those statements.

And Quentin Tarantino telling me what the best movies of the year are is like a precocious seven year old telling me that "Sesame Street Presents Follow that Bird" is the greatest film ever made.

I do not think we need to make this guy into a villain or get so worked up about what he said.

Yup! Agree completely. Just enjoy the film for what it is.

Sesame Street? Better than My Little Pony?! The hell you say.

Is the picture above of Tom Hanks and Shelley Long from "The Money Pit"? Is there "Money Pit" news?

Agree for the most part. It doesn't have to be 100% scientifically accurate, but this is pretty asinine...

1. “Mysteries of #Gravity: Why Bullock, a medical Doctor, is servicing the Hubble Space Telescope.”
7. "Mysteries of #Gravity: Astronaut Clooney informs medical doctor Bullock what happens medically during oxygen deprivation."

Maybe Tyson was merely asked a question, which he then answered. He's a freaking physicist. What would one expect him to say?

And perhaps, just perhaps, there might be a concern that some of the more fact-challenged amongst movie-goers might see this movie and then walk around thinking they have now been taught all about space.

I'm not aware of any cult around him. And even if there were... he would not have been the one that created it.
Personally, I think there are far too few cults surrounding smart people. More Miley Cyruses, we do not need.
