Read earlier that veteran character actor Ed Lauter just passed away at the age of 74. It's always sad losing these kinds of actors. They may never be "stars," but their work weaves them through the fabric of movies, and they become those recognizable faces that you always see, even if you might never know their name. I've been seeing him in various films and television shows since I was a kid, from episodes of Magnum, P.I., The A-Team and Miami Vice, to films such as Death Wish 3, The Rocketeer and Mulholland Falls. No doubt you've seen him in something. He also guest starred in one of my favorite episodes of The X-Files, "Space." He was one of my favorites.

Wow! He had hundreds of roles over the years, including, in 1983, 2 episodes of "Hardcastle & McCormick," which caught my eye. He was one of those supporting actors who, for most of us, wasn't anonymous. So many of us knew who Ed Lauter was, and I agree: He'll be missed.

I doubt that Lauter was ever the lead in a film, but he had a great career. Here's the film in which I first noticed him.

This was the last of four films that Lauter made with Charles Bronson:

Sad to hear... I love his X-files NASA center episode as well as his work on King adaptations (Golden Years, Cujo), great character actor! R.I.P.

Bob: Re: "I doubt that Lauter was ever the lead in a film, but he had a great career. Here's the film in which I first noticed him."

But he had some very sizable roles over the years, many quite memorable.

Immediately recognizable character actor from oh so many movie and TV parts. But did he ever play a positive character, not a thug?

Anyway. R.I.P.

A very, very good actor. Sad to see him pass away.

Instantly recognisable actor - usually a big, menacing, slightly cracked-looking 'hick' type I think.

Wonderful character actor. Loved him in Rocketeer. RIP.

He also appeared in a particularly intense ep of "The Equalizer" as an abusive father who makes the rueful mistake of actually thinking he could pass on that physical disease by man-handling Robert McCall - to his Equally retaliatory regret.

Still, his character's eventual sober recrimination and regret by the segment's conclusion was due in no small part to
Mr. Lauter's considerable craft, understated essence and talented skill.

RIP.

One of the great "That Guy" character actors. He will be missed.

I enjoy(ed) his work tremendously. Great actor.

I think my favorite bits were the cop in "Raw Deal" and a Starfleet Commander in "The First Duty". The TNG role was small and had practically no dialogue but his conveyance of a grieving father was excellent.

RIP.

When I saw the name, I immediately could see his face in my mind.
Well done, Ed Lauter!
RIP

I always identify him with Maloney, that scoundrel in FAMILY PLOT. R.I.P.

First noticed him in King Kong 76 and liked him ever since.

He received a nice-sized obituary in The New York Times today - unusual for character actors, but well deserved in his case.

Funny, but this posting, which was the first about the death of character actor Ed Lauter, seems to be the one that is more interested in Lauter himself than the other one, which strikes me as just another excuse to post a lot of pictures that have little or nothing to do with soundtracks or music. And yes, I do realize that this is the non-film score message board.

So this one gets my vote!

I will forever remember him as the cool coach Murray Chadwick in Youngblood... it´s always sad to see someone you have grown up with pass away, but he will still be with us in his movies forever.
