Just listened to the new Barry AND Scott King Kong releases.
Both very enjoyable and the FSM is a particularly nice presentation.
But I declare the winning score to be... Scott's.

Not my fault that GOLDSMITH is the best by far. I'm also a huge Barry fan but could never understand the love for the Kong score.

That's just one of those things. Despite people passionately trying to persuade me to the contrary, I don't get some scores either.
Me, I find KING KONG to be nothing less than divine. No, it's not a big, upbeat, busy-busy symphonic score, I'll grant you. It's more understated than that.
It's moody. It's mysterious. It's romantic. And, at times, very, very dramatic. It has a lot of gravitas without doing that stupid "crash-bang-wallop orchestra and great grand choir of the apocalypse" thing. It's anchored in really strong themes, there are some really interesting sound combinations developed in the score and it does that really satisfying thing of establishing, developing and wrapping up the themes into a fine musical conclusion.
That's why I love it.

I received this on Tuesday and spent much of yesterday listening to it. The sound is so much better than the previous FSM CD that it's like night and day. It seemed to breeze by the first time! I found myself drawn in by the variations on the different themes, including the monolithic motif for Kong, which is quite haunting.
I do like the track titles from the original LP, though. "Full Moon Domain" and "Arthusa" are very poetic.
I can't wait for John Scott's sequel score to arrive! I have had the LP of that for years, so I'm excited to finally be able to put this on my iPod.

Can I just say: Church Organ is just the most ideal piece of music to make your phone's ringtone.

The Star Crash Blu-Ray claims the Star Crash orchestra was very small but made to sound bigger using studio techniques. It states the piano, for example, was echoed and mixed up to make it a much bigger sound than it was.
