Some titles which I suppose will certainly come till the end of the year from the CAM catalogue are L'ATTICO, IL DEMONIO,

The cat is now out of the bag so that everyone can see the cover for the next CAM Piccioni title which will be released by Beat this month on CD. smile

Holy smokes! eek

The spirits have definitely moved BEAT Records this time.

IL DEMONIO!

Piero Piccioni's fans' prayers have been answered!

It took the 'powers that be' 50 years to deliver us our aural manna, but this is one soundtrack album we Piccioni devotees will want to possess.

The bewitching image of Daliah Lavi should grace more albums covers, too!

Amazing news cannot wait to possess the cd I have been possessed by the rhythms ever since watching the film can't wait to get totally immersed into its depths. big grin

That image off Daliah Lavi is very striking.

Have not heard the last two Piccioni releases yet do have them on order though.

Looking forward to the feast wonder what is going to land on the table next another grail would be very nice hope Beat can skip back a few years earlier for I Dolci Inganni

ToneRow, can you describe the music from this score as you did for APPASSIONATA? If you (or anyone else) would do so, it would be much appreciated!

Sure, Essankay.

A capsule description of IL DEMONIO's music:

Sustained organ chords, at times accompanied by concert-quality percussion techniques, comprise the predominantly ominous atmosphere - at other times a sympathetic theme is played by woodwinds.

Some scenes have a musique concrete feel, though I'm not certain if these sounds are produced by actual electronics or acoustic sounds manipulated via tape. This is based upon watching the film without the benefit of an album, which one can do in YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPcODyIjKNQ&feature=player_detailpage

For the ecclesiastic portions, Piccioni adds orthodox (even neo-classical) brass to the organ, which play in a standard Churchly manner.

In comparison with other Piccioni favorites of mine, IL DEMONIO's aural fabric is cut from the similar cloths of SALVATORE GIULIANO, LO STRANIERO & IL MONACO.

The low-register pitch modulations from SALVATORE GIULIANO are revisited within IL DEMONIO with a greater diversity of material. The ecclesiastical pieces, though, stand alone in contrast to dissonance, whereas in IL MONACO, Piccioni combined both elements fluidly.

The overall hypnotic sound textures also forecast Piccioni's LO STRANIERO opus.

As one can no doubt observe, my Piccioni music preferences lay not with his renown erotica/lounge but moreso by his 'serious' & 'dark' dramatic compositions (especially for the pre-Morricone early '60s B&W films).

I've mentioned my scale of 1 through 8 before in this thread to assess Piccioni albums, so - for whatever it's worth - here are my "8"s which are also my Top 10.

1. UNA TOMBA APERTA ... UNA BARA VUOTA
2. IL FARO IN CAPO AL MONDO
3. LO STRANIERO
4. IL DEMONIO
5. IL MONACO
6. SALVATORE GIULIANO
7. LE MANI SULLA CITTA'
8. IL BACIO
9. SENILITA
10. IL BELL'ANTONIO

Normally, I say THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD is my favorite Piccioni soundtrack, though there's 2 tracks in TOMBA which mesmerize me.

Because my Piero Piccioni journey has only just begun, everything is a delightful discovery. I've ordered selected highlight works, however the dramatic emotional expression is where my interest is most. So THE STRANGER and THE MONK are my favourite like TR. I am very much looking forward to THE DEMON?, and will search for the film now to prepare like I did for the others. When will the earliest be republished is my thought? I want to stay clear of vinyl unless I have no choice like YouTube.

...but I still enjoy SCACCO ALLA REGINA so much.

I was wondering about Piccioni's music for ANNA KARENINA? Seems like a promising project however the sample I heard was more like a lounge music.

I was wondering about Piccioni's music for ANNA KARENINA? Seems like a promising project however the sample I heard was more like a lounge music.

The 1974 TV ANNA KARENINA ranks a "6" with me on my scale of 1 to 8.
There's a ravishing ascending main theme on piano. There're thoughtful variations throughout - some for organ solo or solo guitar.

The detractions of this album, though, are more waltzes than a listener needs.
If you like waltzes, then this won't be a drawback feature. Speaking for myself, though, waltzes are too stately and traditional for listening enjoyment and are in any case are not commentative incidental music but functional source music.

Still I recommend Piero Piccioni's ANNA KARENINA much more than APPASSIONATA.

If interested, these are 5 Piccioni albums which I rank with less than an 8 but higher than ANNA KARENINA:

  • ...Dirai: Ho Ucciso Per Legittima Difesa (7) (sounds like giallo)
  • La Spina Dorsale Del Diavolo (7) (gloriously anachronistic Western which sounds like 1970!)
  • La Volpe Dalla Coda Di Velluto (7) (unforgettable main theme with impressive vocals)
  • Storia Di Una Monaca Di Clausura (7) (Piccioni was right there at the forefront of Euro-nunsploitation)
  • Adua E Le Compagne (6) (big band jazz which surpasses Mancini, IMO)

Wonderful! I am grateful for direction.

In an effort to improve my Piccioni fitness for future releases, orders are looking like:

    1. ...DIRAI: HO UCCISO PER LEGITTIMA DIFESA (Verita Note)
    2. LA SPINA DORSALE DEL DIAVOLO (Legend)
    3. STORIA DI UNA MONACA DI CLAUSURA (the GDM duo of avant guarde Euro-nunsploitation)
    4. E MANI SULLA CITTA' / SALVATORE GIULIANO / IL CASO MATTEI (Legend)
    5. IL DEMONIO (Beat) when it becomes available.

I couldn't resist a 2nd hand CAM CD of SENILITA', and recently obtained LA VOLPE DALLA CODA DI VELLUTO (Verita Note).

Has anybody indulged in Beat's latest L'ATTICO yet?

Has anybody indulged in Beat's latest L'ATTICO yet?

    Hi ajhfsm,
Yes, L'attico has been spinning more than a few times since receiving it last week.

Shimmering vibraphones and sax give us a jazzy start to this wonderful Piccioni score.
The CD follows through with a mix of exotica and lounge with a tiny bit of comedic jalopy ragtime cues sprinkled in for fun. There's even an experimental/atonal cut thrown in as well.
The CD flows nicely, and it plays a bit better than the first Beat Piccioni outing (I Magliari) primarily due to the fact the cues here are more related in style, so the listening experience is more even than Magliari.
The highlight of the score for me is the haunting Ancora. Although it's first appearance on the disc isn't as mesmerizing as in subsequent cues, it's simply beautiful in its off-kilter, bittersweet melody.
This is prime Piccioni in his early jazz/lounge style.
A "must have" for anyone who loves this composer in his jazz moods.

Hope this gives you some flavor of the score!
    Enjoy!

Much as I wish to own a copy of L'ATTICO (as well as I MAGLIARI), I'm not financially able to acquire the CDs I want so far in 2013.

Maybe in another 2 or 3 months, I might be getting these new Piccioni releases.

L'ATTICO is wonderful. The "Ancora" themes are sublime. Piccioni can do no wrong! It's great to see this amazing composer building a strong following among collectors. I'm a recent convert - just a few years old, but I've become a Piccioni completist, which is very expensive when trying to find his back catalogue on CD.

    Hi, wayoutwest.

Looks as if you are only 4 hours ahead of me (I'm on U.S.'s East Coast - EST).
For some reason, I always thought there's a 5-hour difference between the U.K. and the East Coast.

I hope your Sunday friends like Piccioni music, too. smile

Let me extend a heartfelt thanks to your magnanimous offer.
Electronic methods of payments are not possible with me at this time, so - if you don't mind - we can discuss further in my GMail (zaborronald510@gmail.com).

    Ciao!
