THE VENTURE BROS.....sorry, I don't get it. And at this point, I need to find some potential in a show after 2 episodes, at least, if I'm going to follow through.

Moving on to THE WINDSORS.

Meh...I think you'd have to be British to get most enjoyment out of THE WINDSORS (tried first two episodes). Moving on to TOAST OF LONDON, then.

THE END OF THE F***NG WORLD was a great show. Binged the 8 episodes in two sittings, basically. Hope they'll make a second season.

Meanwhile, I'm finding it somewhat sluggish to get through TOAST OF LONDON (more like a 'skit show' than any kind of overarching narrative). But I'm halfway through it, and will go the distance. Not quite my cuppa tea, although I appreciate some of the surrealism.

OK, I'm on to TRAILER PARK BOYS now, and really loving it. 11 seasons worth, and a bunch of movies. I have the watching cut out for me!

Hilarious! Some of it is outright repulsive (and I find myself feeling sorry at times for Ricky and Julian), but it can definitely elicit an astounded cackle or dozen.

I have to say for the record, do not ever watch 2 Broke Girls, even if you have a gun to your head. I don't see it on your list -- good. I try not to go out of my way to slam something, but since this is a "recommendation" thread I thought I would try to do what I think is the right thing and warn you away from it. One of the worst sitcoms I've ever seen -- probably the worst. It's as shockingly awful as that time Chevy Chase had a late night talk show. It's not just that it's unfunny -- that would be okay and there are plenty of sitcoms out there that fit that description -- but it's gratingly and irritatingly unfunny. Sitcoms are obviously fake, but the level of artifice in 2 Broke Girls is unbelievable. It's as if it's parodying every single sitcom cliche but doesn't even realize it -- an unintentional walk through the worst things that sitcoms can do or be. I was just channel surfing this morning and landed on it, and ended up watching a few minutes out of incredulity, trying to fathom why it bothers me so much. It's like looking at a trainwreck and I admit I got suckered into giving it my attention when it doesn't deserve it! It's a shame because I think Kat Dennings can be talented...elsewhere...

Please excuse the negativity in this post but I felt compelled to make this public service announcement.

Thanks, Deputy. Non-recommendations are appreciated too!

Tried a couple of episodes of TRANSPARENT, and that didn't do it for me. So I'm moving on to UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT.

Two episodes into KIMMY SCHMIDT, and I realize this is not for me either. I have an issue with this kind of frenetic, American comedy -- and I've never liked Tina Fey. So moving quickly on to VEEP, which of course is a major series that I've heard a lot about.

Thor, I saw that you have Santa Clarita Diet "in process of viewing" or whatever. Does that mean you've finished the previous first season and are in the midst of the second which was recently released? It may have been discussed previously in the thread (and I think I may have recommended it) but what do you think of it?

I'm assuming you didn't care for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (which I haven't seen) for similar reasons to your dislike of New Girl - what you call "frenetic" kind of sitcom. Don't know if those are similar or not, but do you remember New Girl well enough to say they both unappeal to you for roughly the same reasons? Just curious.

I recommend recently Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and I'd be surprised if you felt as if it was of a "frenetic sitcom" nature like New Girl - I don't think it's that, but rather more silly SNL-style with non-sequiturs aplenty, so I'm curious if you will like it. Speaking of which, I saw you didn't have the original TBS comedy Angie Tribeca on your list, starring Rashida Jones and produced by Steve Carell. It's total silliness. If you like Airplane! or The Naked Gun I would highly recommend it. Ever considered it?

Also, have you ever considered providing something like 1-to-5 star ratings for the shows you've listed in your opening post? I know that could be hard to do, but it might give people an idea what to recommend (or what not to recommend) based on your tastes which could partially be reflected through a cursory rating such as that. If they had a clear understanding of which shows you liked best out of that long list, you might be less likely to incur regrettable recommendations! Although people are passionate about the shows they love, so they may recommend them anyway ("give it a try!").

I like it reasonably well. A bit grossed out here and there (and I'm still struggling with Timothy Olyphant in a whimsical role), but that's the purpose. Binged the second season a few days ago. smile

Yes! Well observed.

BROOKLYN NINE NINE is already added, but I'll add ANGIE TRIBECA. Thanks! I like both Rashida Jones and Steve Carell, so that's a good start.

Good idea. Should have done that while they were fresh in memory, but I'll think about that.

Sorry, VEEP wasn't for me either. I didn't understand a thing; I have a problem with films and tv shows that are all about rapid-fire dialogue with lots of information.

I guess if there's a common thread to the things I like, it's that the comedy stems naturally from the situations themselves -- not that it's being "forced" through some external means. All of my alltime favourite sitcoms have this -- SEINFELD, FRASIER, CHEERS, KING OF QUEENS etc.

So moving on to the next suggestion, YOU'RE THE WORST, before I start at the top, at 'A' again (with all the new suggestions).

First episode of YOU'RE THE WORST is not too shabby. Normally, I'm not that keen on relationship dramas, but I like the narcissistic characters that are seemingly uninterested in commiting (unlike most romantic dramas, that's something I can relate to). Gonna give it a few more episodes.

OK, I've come to the end of the list, with the reasonably good YOU'RE THE WORST (seen all 4 seasons). So I'm starting over on the list, first new one out is ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE. If I can find it.

I just binged THE IT CROWD in a few days. Pretty good show. Nobody suggested it, though, I just took a chance on Netflix and enjoyed it.

I've started to go through the list from the top again, with all the new suggestions now in their alphabetical spot.

I cannot find ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE anywhere. Neither ANGIE TRIBECA (a lacklustre attempt at NAKED GUN?), BETTER OFF TED nor BROOKLYN NINE-NINE did anything for me. Couldn't find COUNT ARTHUR STRONG. So now I'm trying CUCKOO and DARKPLACE.

I enjoyed KIMMY until....
They introduced the Ty character. One of my most disliked tropes is the 'best friend' who constantly gets the other in trouble. Or worse, does things that actually can do serious harm to the other's well being. e.g. shooting a music video in her clients home and trashing the place!
The British show THE LAST DETECTIVE built a sh0w around this. I mean who would stay friends with a person who is constantly screwing up your life?*
Hate that!
Brm

THE ODD COUPLE also used this trope BUT at least acknowledged it by having Oscar continuously trying to get rid of Felix>

CUCKOO was alright, but I can't stand 'home intrusion'-type characters like the title character. Had the same issue with Kramer; my favourite on SEINFELD, but that constant home intrusion-type behaviour of his was by far the most uncomfortable part of the show. I know it's intentional and all, but the discomfort outweighs the comedy for me. So I'll have to bail on that.

DARKPLACE is OK -- in that wacky, absurd British style that only Matt Berry and his crowd are able to conjure up.

Wow, INSIDE NO. 9 is really great. Not all episodes are on the same level, and some are rather bereft of 'comedy', but great writing overall.

I really liked Psych until the template was set in stone so...basically season one.

Kimmy for me was too often analogous in its goofiness too the poorest seasons of 30 Rock. Being that I am a HUGE fan of 30 Rock (plus, Kimmy DID have its great points), I stuck around for three seasons.
