the CD player has ..... the SB Touch has a better DAC than the CD player ...!

What abbreviations are you querying?

SB: Squeezebox Touch (Logitech system)
CD: CD player (the means by which most people have played CDs ... smile)
DAC: Digital to Analogue Conversion (the means by which we mere mortals are able to hear the sound from the digital medium)
smile

you left out FLAC & WMA (i updated my post)
smile

Ah, sorry:
WMA ... Microsoft Windows Media Audio ... on all (?) MS PCs ... very problematical but generally very good means of carrying audio on the PC for streaming (or simply listening to on the PC) ... you can rip at different quality levels and I've always opted for LossLess since the sound quality is far superior to Lossy (such as mp3)
FLAC ... Free Lossless Audio Codec (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLAC) I'm switching from keeping my CD library on a PC hard-drive to NAS (Network attached storage) which has various advantages ... on the down-side the NAS does not recognise WMA so I'm having to convert ... a slow (but enjoyable) process.

All clear?

Having just finished listening to the album presentation of this superb score (CD2 trs.1-13) I now know why I've never rated the score that highly amongst my collection of John Barry works ...

... this FSM release is a revelation: the improved sound is wonderful ... the old SCSE release sounds like it's being played inside a dustbin it is so muffled in comparison.

I won't play the rest of the 2CDs just yet (I have another 6 OSTs in today's arrivals) but I shall enjoy that album for a while longer ... smile

Yes, it's worked for me for years (1986 ... 2010 approx.) but streaming ...

1. open directory (Controller, PC, Touch-screen, Mobile phone, etc.)
2. select album (via artist, album title, genre ... even year! ...) Or: play on Random ... can be quite weird/amusing

3. press play ...
and, best of all ...

I can lie in bed and select the music I want to hear (and see what is playing from the Controller's, etc. screen) without getting up!
Ha!

NP: Symphonic Dances - Rachmaninov ... and I haven't moved away from my PC

For those "into" iTunes I understand that that's a great method of holding one's CD library.

I've kept away ... so far.

Yes, I think i-Tunes (and similar) represents an excellent way to do three things:

1. Making an organized digital backup of your CD collection with track titles and cover art. People still try to tell me it is impossible for CDs to be stolen, bronzed or damaged by fire or flood. And my reply is: no it's not, it happened to me.

2. Taking your entire CD collection on holiday, on business trips, in the car, on the train, etc.

3. Taking CD sets like Ben Hur, Star Trek TMP and Body Heat and creating your own logical programmes that don't have to slightly spill from one CD to another.

If you love music, why wouldn't you want to do these things?

If *is* possible for lossless itunes rips to sound inferior to the CD because of course there is an analogue stage between the CD player and amplifier. How good is the DAC in the itunes device compared to the DAC in the CD player?

However, in general, this would not be an audible difference. I still hear people claiming they can hear the difference between CD and itunes lossless via an ipod, but I doubt it.

Cheers

as long as you are listening to music in HIGH FIDELITY:
-lossless bit rate
-played thru decent external speakers

folks who listen to downloads thru their computer ,or headsets, are listening to an APPROXIMATION of the music . this saddens me greatly

Don't forget:
- the transport
- the DAC
- the amp (pre/power) and
- the interconnects (cables) ...

Otherwise, I agree with you ... but then I find headphones make my ears buzz after a few minutes so I'm not willing to invest in a system which excludes decent external speakers.

Of course, that said, my budget restricts me to affordable decent external speakers but the theory holds smile

I just put the first CD of this 2CD set into my iMac, and when I opened iTunes, it said the track names weren't available. Has no-one loaded these names to iTunes yet?

Like "King Kong", I get the following message:

"This CD was not found in the CDDB database.

You can enter information for the CD and each of its tracks. If this is a commercial CD, you can submit the information you entered to the database for others to use. See iTunes Help for details."

Well, it's listed at freeDB (which is not the same as CDDB):

The link above was to King Kong CD1. Here's Body Heat:

http://www.freedb.org/freedb/soundtrack/13126225 (CD1)
http://www.freedb.org/freedb/soundtrack/400e5117 (CD2)

Perhaps you can copy and paste the listings instead of typing them in.

First time through, while immersing myself in FSM's excellent documentation, I renewed my admiration for a rich and fascinating score -- my favorite Barry on records.

Second time, attempting to listen with full attention, I found my mind wandering. When my wife interjected, "It's beautiful but terribly repetitive," I had to agree. That's why I don't have many Barry albums.

Next time, I'll try the album version.
