I picked up "..Dirai: ho ucciso per legittima difesa" last year - it was recommended earlier in the thread, I think - and I absolutely love it. Great dark/heavy/melancholy sounds with the occasional cool groove. I'm listening again now and it's hitting the spot.

Haven't checked in on this thread for a while, but am still regularly picking up Piero titles. ToneRow will be pleased (surprised!) to learn that I've even been going pre-66! Ordered the following recently (but none have arrived yet):

"Minnesota Clay"
"Il demonio"
“L’Attico”

As someone who has picked up almost every Piccioni title he can get his hands on over the last few years, I'd like to recommend LA DONNA CHE VENNE DAL MARE, which I only just bought recently. It's a magnificent, heartfelt Piccioni score with lush orchestrations reminiscent of those from the Douglas Sirk era. If you enjoy Elmer Bernstein's FAR FROM HEAVEN, you'll get a kick out of this one. I don't think I've quite heard a Piccioni score like this one and wouldn't necessarily have pegged him as the composer during a blind listening test. But the themes are sumptuous and linger long after you've finished listening. This may turn out to be one of my favorite Piccionis after I give it a few more spins. Without going back through twenty something pages on this thread, I don't believe I've read much about this one - but I could be wrong.

Nice comparison I do enjoy Far from Heaven and I like La Donna Che Venne Dal Mare very much it has a very golden age vibe I'd liken it to The Ghost and Mrs Muir love those sounds of the sea and when fate seems to be hanging in the balance. Have just finished giving it another spin think I’ll hop aboard the Mary Deare. wink

Yes, also a great comparison with THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR.

Possibly my favorite Piccioni score - that Golden Age sound makes my heart glow!
Though IMHO it has little to do with "Far From Heaven" or "Mrs. Muir", guys - sounds like Adolph Deutsch or Roy Webb!...

Hi, Juggler.

I spotlighted LA DONNA CHE VENNE DAL MARE in this other thread:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?forumID=7&pageID=2&threadID=91983&archive=0

(actually on the other "non-film" side because this thread was initially started by neotrinity as an appreciation for Virna Lisi).

Wow!

KenG is finally "pulling the trigger" on 1963 and acquiring some earlier Piero. smile

L'ATTICO is straight-ahead jazz [although BEAT prints the year 1963 on the album, I had thought the film was made in 1962(?) - perhaps I misread about the film data somewhere/sometime]

Thanks Tone, that was very informative.

I just today FINALLY got my hands on the very pricey (and hard to find!) MAESTRO SERIES VOL. 1 PIERO PICCIONI PART 1 (which has been written about quite a bit on these boards) -- and all I can say, is that if you're a Piccioni fan, then this is an essential disc. For me, just having the HARVEST MOON DANCE/PUPPET ON A CHAIN track makes the disc worth parting with my life savings for! But every track is a keeper.

I have a question: since the disc is titled PART 1, does a PART 2 exist?

Thanks!

I think it may have been an abandoned project.

Meanwhile I'm concentrating on the new releases and hoping Piccioni gets a strong showing in the remainder of the years releases.

L'ATTICO was released in Italian cinemas end of March 1963. IL DEMONIO came out a few months later in September 1963.

What could next for Piccioni releases? Which period in the composers career? What is most deserving or desirable?

Looks like I FRATELLI KARAMOZOV is going to be later than expected.

My copy turned up around a fortnight ago at my home I never had the time to listen to it though while I was at home last weekend.

The next Beat title is from 1965

Some titles I'd love to see a release off
1960 I Dolci Inganni
1969 Le Altre
1976 I Vizi Morbosi di una Governante
1979 Cristo si e fermato a eboli

Kronos has updated their site regarding KARAMAZOV, declaring all orders have now shipped. It is no longer pre-order and the next titles for pre-order are due to be announced.

Kronos Records proudly presents the original complete score of the 1969 TV mini-series I FRATELLI KARAMAZOV, composed, orchestrated and conducted by Maestro PIERO PICCIONI.

This is the first time this title is released on CD. Selected , edited and digitally remastered by Claudio Fuiano exclusively for Kronos Records; this gorgeous 2CD set carries 52 tracks for a total running time of 137minutes and is limited to 500 copies. The score is rich in highly dramatic, epic and melodramatic motifs, which are the perfect score to Sandro Bolchi's tv adapatation of Dostoyevsky's final novel by the same name. This is one of Piero Piccioni's most beautiful and intense works. Definitely destined to sell out very quickly, so act now and preorder your copy before it is too late. No Piccioni fan can miss this!

I received I FRATELLI KARAMOZOV directly from Kronos a few weeks ago. It's a most enjoyable Piccioni score containing some beautiful melodies, well worth having, I like it a lot!

What is this latest BEAT offering, IO LA CONSCEVO BENE? Doesn't seem like a recommended Piccioni, possibly lounge styles?

On the contrary, this is one of my favourite, certainly highly recommended.

Yes, early lounge style, with a bit of jazz.
