TCM ON SATURDAY AUGUST 3RD has a ALEC GUINNESS marathon -Here are the films in the order they are shown-GREAT EXPECTATIONS-46-OLIVER TWIST-48-THE LAVENDER HILL MOB-51-THE LADYKILLERS-55- A MAJORITY OF ONE-61- DR ZHIVAGO-65- LAWRENCE OF ARABIA-62- KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS-49-THE SCAPEGOAT-59-HOTEL PARADISO-66.ENJOY

HOTEL PARADISO was directed by Peter Glenville (SUMMER AND SMOKE, BECKET), and along with Alec Guinness, stars Gina Lollobrigida. Glenville specialized in play adaptations, and HOTEL PARADISO was based upon the 1894 French farce L'hôtel du libre échange by Georges Feydeau and Maurice Desvallières.

The film has never been released on DVD, so this showing (early Sunday morning, August 4, at 4 AM ET) is a rare chance to see the film in its widescreen Panavision proportions. FSM released the film's MGM soundtrack LP by Laurence Rosenthal in 2011, on a double disc set with Glenville's next adaptation, THE COMEDIANS (from Graham Greene's novel).

On Sunday morning, August 11, at 5 AM ET, THIS TV will be showing the 1976 Italian thriller STRANGE SHADOWS IN AN EMPTY ROOM, starring Stuart Whitman, John Saxon, and Martin Landau. The original Italian title of the film is "Una Magnum Special per Tony Saitta," but it's probably best known by its video title of BLAZING MAGNUM. Interestingly enough, the film was shot on location in Montreal and Ottawa, Canada.

The film was released on cassette by Lionsgate, but has never had a decent DVD release in the U.S. The film has a score by Armando Trovaioli, which was released on CD by Beat Records in 2008.

STRANGE SHADOWS IN A EMPTY ROOM -77- Never got a network showing and as far as I can see was never in a syndication package in America. Was very rare on cable. Probably the year after it got made was shown a few times on certain cable outlets. It did get a theatrical release in America from AIP often the lower half of a double bill, in a era where the double feature was on it's last legs. Has a nice car chase scene.

During the August 13-14 overnight (Tuesday – Wednesday), at 4:00 AM ET, Turner Classic Movies will be showing the little seen film 80 STEPS TO JONAH. This 1969 film has the first ever feature film appearance by singer Wayne Newton—as the dramatic lead no less. Newton plays a drifter, fleeing from police, who becomes involved in a camp for blind children.

The film has some solid talent behind the camera, including director Gerd Oswald (SCREAMING MIMI, BUNNY O'HARE) and cinematographer Joseph LaShelle (THE APARTMENT, MARTY), as well as a group of great character actors supporting Newton (Jo Van Fleet, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens, Mickey Rooney, Sal Mineo, R.G. Armstrong). In addition, 80 STEPS TO JONAH contains the only feature film score by pianist George Shearing. And of course, Newton sings four songs in the film, three of which he co-composed.

80 STEPS TO JONAH has never been made available on any home video format. Here are three television spots for the film:

Hey Dan,
If you have a look at "Reflections..." could you possibly post here as to which version they present (whether it's the Technicolor version or the original gold tinted version)? I ask because I live in Australia and do not have access to your superior TCM channel there in the States. I would be most grateful if by chance you could let me know since it pertains to some research l'm doing for my site.

Thanks, A

The British film OUR MAN IN MARRAKESH was retitled BANG! BANG! YOU'RE DEAD! when it was released in the U.S. The film is not available on Region 1 DVD, and its score, by Malcolm Lockyer, has never had a release.

Here's the film's U.S. trailer:

Today, Monday, August 19, Turner Classic Movies will be showing a day of Randolph Scott films. Among them are two of his westerns for Warner Bros. that have never had any home video release.

At 12:30 PM ET is THE BOUNTY HUNTER (1954). This film was originally planned as a 3-D feature, and was directed by Andre de Toth, who directed Warner's HOUSE OF WAX. Although not released in 3-D, THE BOUNTY HUNTER contains considerable "in your face" action. David Buttolph scored the film.

And at 3:30 PM ET is SHOOT-OUT AT MEDICINE BEND (1957). This film was one of the first to be shot in a new Western set on Warner's six-acre backlot, which was built to supplement the studio's Calabasas ranch. Roy Webb scored the film.
