The Dirty Dozen

Capt. Stuart Kinder is psychologically profiling "the dozen," with Wladislaw next.

Capt. Kinder: Now, this is really quite simple. I'm going to say one word and then I want you to come back at me . . . as fast as you can with whatever word comes to your mind. For instance, if I were to say "happiness," you might say "children."

Wladislaw: I wouldn't say that.

Capt. Kinder: Well, that was just an example. But if I said "ambition" what would you say?

Wladislaw: I wouldn't say anything.

Capt. Kinder: Well look, let's give it a try okay?

Wladislaw: says nothing but pointedly shrugs shoulders in disinterest with arms folded.

Capt. Kinder: Weapon.

Wladislaw: Baseball.

Capt. Kinder: Knife.

Wladislaw: Dodgers.

Capt. Kinder: Officer.

Wladislaw: Pitcher.

Capt. Kinder: You, uh, you seem to be thinking about just one thing, aren't you?

Wladislaw: (slowly) Yeah. What are you thinking about?

Capt. Kinder: (perturbed) Well uh, you see, uh, I don't want you to think of just one thing. I'd like for you to concentrate on each word I throw at you. Okay?

Wladislaw: (breathes in to half-heartedly signify knotty agreement) Okay.

Capt. Kinder: (thinking he's getting somewhere now) Food.

Wladislaw: Cincinnati.

Capt. Kinder: (dejection creeping in) Comfort.

Wladislaw: Chicago.

Capt. Kinder: Now, what made you say that?

Wladislaw: That's what I was thinking about.

Capt. Kinder realises what he's banging his head against.

THE MALTESE FALCON and THE BIG SLEEP have some of the wittiest dialog I ever heard. I'm not going to quote it, though. It has to be seen in the film to be appreciated. Taking it out of the context of the film ruins it.

Janice Rule: "Hey, sheriff, come to my party. All you need is a pistol and you've got one."

cool Brando: "With all the pistols you have there,

I don't think there would be any room for mine." wink

... and then there's Eric Rohmer's observational films about relationships. Especially MY NIGHT AT MAUD'S (1969) and CLAIR'S KNEE (1970). Think of his films as behavioral studies. Rohmer, for those who don't know, was a professor of languages in France who would make a discursive film once a year. The dialogues between men and women, and sometimes between women and women, is endlessly fascinating.

They Shoot Horses Don't They 1969

Promoter Gig Young talking to a fizzed-out Jane Fonda, who's just said that maybe she could win the dance contest:

Look, sweetheart. I've been in this business a long time. I may not know a winner when I see one, but I sure as hell can spot a loser.

Listening to the soundtrack has reminded me of it:

"Damn thieves! They're everywhere!"

"They're boxing us in with these rules of engagement. If you agree to 'em, and one of our planes gets knocked down or one of the ships won't stop for inspection, the Chiefs will have us by the balls and will force us to start shooting. They want a war, and they're arranging things to get one. If you don't want one, we have to do something about it."

~Kevin Costner in Thirteen Days (2000)

Great stuff! Is it before or after that she says, give us a kiss (sounds more like keeess). Me & a few members of my family used to quote that scene, well when I say family I mean my niece & nephew, my sister (their mother) still blames me for them growing-up to be movie-mad nutcases.

Another scene we used to quote was from, Start The Revolution Without Me, I'll see if I can find it.

eek Oops, sorry, edit, Pally. eek Marie Gomez says that to Mr. Lancaster AFTER she asks for the ultimately deceptive kiss (which, if you can remember, engenders a priceless reaction from the latter) ...

That's it, just as well the gun was out of bullets. I love it that Burt doesn't mind that she tried to kill him.

Wyatt EarpĀ (1994)

Frank Mclaury: You're next on my list, Holliday. You better get used to seeing my face, 'cause it's the last thing you're gonna see.

Doc Holliday: McLaury, seeing your face would be a pleasant change. I understand most of your enemies got it in the back.
