Interesting. The New Oxford American Dictionary defines parody as…

an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect

    (The bold is mine, obviously.)

The legal definition of parody (which is important, because in America parody is protected speech) requires the parody itself to be "transformative," meaning it adds some new insight to turn a copyrighted work into a comment on that work or its context.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines my contributions to this thread as "pedantic" and "wearisome."

I'm not a lawyer, I'm not worried about the legal definition of a word. Webster's dictionary has been around longer than you. Well, maybe... ;-)

    MV,

I popped out disc four of "Superman: The Animated Series" today and there are two cuts in the disc and some scuff marks. One is curved and right at what looks to be the end of hte material on the disc, suggesting a factory error. I just started on the disc last night, so I haven't made it that far to know if it affects the play.

If it does, is it possible to get a replacement disc four?

I wanna be pedantic, I wanna be pedantic too!

Just read over Schiffy's and Justin's back and forth about parody, and I think a more important point got obscured. It doesn't really matter whether the piece of music in question is exaggerated per se or simply an apt copy (which is strictly speaking pastiche not parody). The point is that the music is a crucial part of the effect of the animated parody overall and essential to the parody's success (or failure, depending on your point of view).

It's like with the Airplane movies. Some of the musical pastiches are indeed parodistic - just that much more over-the-top, and sound like it with or without the images. Others (like the interpolation of Battlestar Galactica in Airplane II) are really only parody in the context of the images. But both kinds should be considered parodies because they are essential to the parody in a crucial way but not necessarily a strict parody when heard in isolation - the age old conundrum in listening to film and tv music on its own.

(By the way, I also am not talking legal definitions or whether something would pass copyright muster on parody.)

    Yours wearisomely....

Usually you'll see that the morning-of release. First on LLL's e-mail list, and later on boards like this one when somebody crossposts it.

Since it only took six YEARS to sell out, I'm guessing that's the last of The Flash we'll see, sad to say. Wonderful album (for a show I never paid much attention to until I got the soundtrack years ago).
