Boring orchestral masturbation that leaves me cold. I have really tried. Bought all the editions. The rerecording. The lot. But Superman is one of the rare examples of Williams doing a great theme and a mediocre rest.

Ladies and gentlemen, the number one troll post of 2018 on FSM!

Are you so dumb that you can't take another opionon that differs from yours

you can take your troll-opinion and stick it up in your shit that fills the asshole

Can't you take my opinion of a ludicrous opinion that fails on its own merits?

This is no doubt deleted dialogue from the scene in which Jor-El chastises the Council of Krypton.

Which Williams left unscored. Understandably.

@mortenbond I'm just curious as to what you mean by "boring orchestral masturbation"?

Serious.

What he really meant was the sounds his makes while yanking off to "Superfeats".

Well, I hope this little incident hasn't put you off flying. Statistically speaking of course it's still the safest way to travel.

Make sure to maintain high altitude when approaching Tessmacher Peaks.

Well, thanks for asking in a mild mannered fashion. I know I can raise temperament with these views. My view is this: I think - for example - the three first Star Wars and Indys had great cues in between the obvious stand-outs. Examples of the latter are the Ark theme, the Imperial March, etc. But in between these Williams did a fabulous theme for the Asteroid field, the escape from the sandy clitoris Jabba wants to drop Luke into, Indys escape from the temple, The Boat chase and Motorcycle chase in Indy III etc. etc. There are so many great cues. But with Superman, there are only the obvious, mind boggling hits, like the theme, love theme, krypton theme. The music in between is not as engaging as the in-between score of some other Williams adventure films. It is too much orchestra-playing-their asses-off-Wall-of-sound-approach with strings and trumpet flourishes galore. That's what I think is orchestral masturbation. When David Arnold does it, people hate him for it. With Williams, we tend to worship it all.

I'm not slagging Superman, `cause it is way much better than most other scores by most other composers. But in the great canon of Williams scores, this one is actually ranked rather low in my book. And it is not from lack of trying to like it better.

You can't argue youself out of this one

when you hasn't ask why his opinoin is what it is, then you fail totally on your own merit

I can't agree, mortenbond (but thanks for explaining yourself – I'm not sure "masturbation" is the best way to describe that!). I mean, "Leaving Home"? "The Fortress of Solitude"? "Helicopter Sequence"? Even something like "Superfeats" has a motif running through it that makes it intriguing in its own right.

Obviously, you like what you like. But to me, "Superman" is the opposite of what you're describing.

I agree... there is no "filler" music in SUPERMAN, this is a well constructed score, one that is engaging from start to finish.

I think I see where he's going... In SUPERMAN there are no set-pieces a-la INDY films (except maybe the helicopter rescue), so the scoring for the action moments is different

but you have "individually scored" moments too, like the 'growing up' scene, and plenty of leit-motives

No, I don't. Anyone that calls Williams work on Superman orchestral masturbation and not on the same level as Star Wars, Raiders or "those two shark films" he can't remember is an idiot. End of story.

The fantastic Blue Box is still available, and comes with other fantastic Superman scores.

No need for these separate Superman re-releases again. The LLL sets are the same masters and amounts of music.

And Superman 1 featured in the Blue Box has the best source available.

Did La-La Land do the same kind of improvement tinkering with their Superman 2 and 3 release that they did with 4?

Nothing was improved with 2, 3 or 4:

The master and musical content for Superman IV are the same as they were in the Blue Box. The notes have been reconfigured to go with this 2 cd set. Art direction, however, is all new courtesy of Jim Titus.

MV

The Superman 2+3 releases have some extra terrible source music, if you call that an improvement, I guess. Basically these re-releases are for specific collectors who just want the new packaging.

Also for those who didn't get the Blue Box.
