I watched 'Golden the other night with my son-in-law. The Blu-ray quality is outstanding, and the music sounds terrific. As to the film itself... the pace is often slow compared to the better Harryhausen efforts, and the characters are not really developed, leaving little emotional investment on the part of the audience.
I couldn't disagree with you more! Sinbad as played by John Phillip Law is charming, gently roguish, and the way he protects Margiana (Caroline Munro), who basically is handed to him as his personal sex slave) and refuses to exploit her is quite touching. (I disagree with Andy Dursin's appraisal of Law's performance. With all due respect to the great Kerwin Mathews, Law is my favorite Sinbad by far and what a disappointment that he wasn't brought back for the next film as originally intended).
I have seen GOLDEN VOYAGE many times (going back to its initial release when I was a kid) and have never found it slow going (especially compared to the lethargic EYE OF THE TIGER). I do think this SINBAD has a touch more human subtext than most Harryhausens, excepting CLASH OF THE TITANS and VALLEY OF GWANGI.
All in all, one of the best, most colorful escapist fantasies every produced, by Harryhausen or anyone else.

I love The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. It was my first Harryhausen film I saw at my local cinema. Back in those days, you could stay after and catch a second performance! I for one never found it a slow film. It has some great characters and a good script from Brian Clemens. If I had to make a short list of my favourite fantasy films, this would be at the top of my list. Pure Harryhausen magic.
