Like a lot of Ottman scores, it is way too reliant on childrens choir.

You must be listening to a different score. Yes it uses the choir but it does NOT rely on it.

Trent: Re: "You must be listening to a different score. Yes it uses the choir but it does NOT rely on it."

I don't know about the new expanded version, but the original, with the exception of the John Williams cues, has so many choral references that it's practically an oratorio! (I could find only one of Ottman's own cues that doesn't include a chorus for at least part of it.) So I think that Trent made a valid point, although the choral aspects seem to work, unless you're just not into the use of choruses in soundtracks, in which case it probably would seem to be "too reliant" on them.

You should get LLL's release then. You might change your mind on the score.

This is a fabulous score. The movie has issues ( it is a MUCH better film than the horrid, horrid, Man Of Steel, even if I kinda like Zimmer's score - not as a Superman score per se, but as a stand alone listen ) but the score is a fine, lovely effort.

On the original album, the finale cue is just fabulous... much more effective than the film version, it caps the album perfectly. And the "How Could You Leave Us" track... gorgeous !

I can't afford LaLa's expansion right now - if someone wants to trade I've got a post over on the trading board big grin - but this IS on my must-have list.

Trent: Re: "You should get LLL's release then. You might change your mind on the score."

I happen to be a fan of John Ottman (as both composer AND film editor), but I've simply been unable to get that much into his score for "Superman Returns." Yes, as you say, with LLL's expansion I might change my mind, but having gone bonkers buying new music and Blu-rays and DVDs and stereo equipment over the past few months, I have to draw the line, and, alas, Ottman's score seems to be the loser here. But I'm going to try to listen to the original again through my big stereo and see if it captures my attention -- which, of course, is probably pointless if the original soundtrack bears so little resemblance to the expanded one. We'll see. I've been known to change my mind in the past.

...and once again, predictable as the sun, Superman Returns - both score and film - turn out to be as divisive as ever...though sometimes I have to wonder if those who slate it so enthusiastically have ever actually seen/heard it....or just "hate" it because it became something that, for a very brief time, it became something that was cool to hate...

If sales are any indication there is certainly a hell of a lot more love for the score than hate. 2000 units have already flown away.

Whatever your thoughts about Man Of Steel, at least it was a bold new vision. Returns just felt like warmed up leftovers.

At least Returns has Superman saving people and not COMMITTING MURDER. And it had the proper Williams music.

Yes but at least Man Of Steels Superman didnt date rape Lois Lane and leave earth for a few years rather than pay child support under the pretense of ' Oh i just wanted to make sure that Krypton was in fact destroyed when i knew it already was '.

Also MOS's Superman didnt use his X ray vision to spy on Lois Lane like a creepy stalker and break into her house through her childs bedroom to creepily watch her son sleep.

As for the committing murder thing, he did so to SAVE PEOPLE FROM BEING CUT IN HALF BY ZOD.At least he was genuinely upset for doing it compared to Reeves Superman who actually GRINNED when he through a depowered Zod to his death.

Yeah...after letting half of Metropolis get reduced to a pile of rubble by not taking the fight with Zod to an unpopulated area. I'm sure those whopping four people he rescued by snapping the villain's neck totally cancel out the thousands crushed to death by the thirty collapsing skyscrapers left in Supes' wake.

I remember that now. While walking out of the theater after MOS, I was saying that if this really happened about 50,000 people would be dead. Those skyscrapers have a lot of workers in them.

Superman leaves for unpopulated area (a la Superman II). Zod says "I don't WANT Superman. I want squishy little Earthlings!" and continues to trash Metropolis, Chicago, Tokyo (it's a classic). What THEN?

While I admit the movie was not good/great, but I enjoyed it and the Ottman score.

I dont remember anyone seen being crushed to death during the final fight between Supes and Zod.Most of those buildings were evacuated during the world engine attack. As for the fight taking place in Metropolis, Supes didnt have much choice in the matter as Zod said he was going to kill and keep on killing humans.

And by your reasoning, Reeves Superman is a bigger fool for CHALLENGING Zod and his buddies to a fight right in the middle of a fully populated Metropolis in Superman 2.Oh and he cold bloodledly killed Zod despite the fact he was no depowered and no longer a threat.

At one point in MOS, Supes tossed Zod into space in an effort to take the fight away from the city but Zod takes it back down there again.Superman saved ALL OF HUMANITY by killing Zod.He had no other choice.

I do remember Supes being responsible for crushing a few of Luthors henchman to death when he lifted that giant rock at the climax of Stalkerman Returns though, not to mention his bastard child crushing some dude to death with a piano.

Anyways, this thread is about the music to Returns so il just leave it with i think it sucks....just like the movie.

My main problem with Man of Steel is that it was so darn bleak. It not only didn't feel like a Superman movie to me, but also didn't feel much like a movie in general that I'd ever want to rewatch. Not sure why I felt this way about MoS when I enjoyed the bleaker Nolan Batman movies.

I remember seeing Superman Returns twice in theaters, loving it the first time and liking it a little less on second viewing (it felt a little overlong for me). Of course, seven years can change a lot, so I'll have to view it again sometime. I am very pleased with this CD, and I think it sheds a lot of light on Ottman's score.

I'd agree with this. (Though I'm no fan of Nolan's output)
