The previously mentioned Sleeping Beauty is definitely my favorite score based on previously written material. George Bruns did such a wonderful job molding Tchaikovsky’s music into a coherent film score while staying true to Tchaikovsky’s style. The climactic “Battle with the Forces of Evil” cue is a perfect example of Bruns taking several different excerpts from the ballet and combining them seamlessly. While I’m sure Porgy and Bess had a fine adaptation of Gershwin’s opera, I really feel this should have won the score adaptation/treatment Oscar.
