But Joan wasn't a film actress primarily. A celebrity of note but you have to understand that they always leave someone out and people feel slighted. It's not a popularity contest but it does ultimately come down to how to fit names into the allotted time gjven.

Yeah, pity that none of Band's scores ever got recognized.

Oh man, this cracked me up. I do love (orchestral) Richard Band a lot but still this was a hell of a laugh!

So they just had a tribute on the Oscars for all the different deceased people who contributed to the making of movies. This list included not just actors, but directors, sound editors, costume designers, producers, etc... but NOT ONE FILM COMPOSER WAS EVEN MENTIONED! Not even Jerry Goldsmith. NOT ONE! And all the while theyre playing really syruppy sentimental MUSIC to their tribute. Bone heads.

Let me understand this. In the middle of a tribute to everyone who died during the last year you wanted them to say "Oh yeah, let's hear it for Jerry Goldsmith who died years ago". I am used to the Academy hate on here but this is ridiculous beyond belief.

But I have to admit it is all my fault.

Like the Oscar haters who keep watching the Oscars, I keep opening these threads.

I deserve everything I get.

A very classy "In Memoriam" segment this year, I thought. They went back to an orchestral backing rather than have a live performer compete with the dearly departed. (A live performer sang after the segment.) They also showed the pictures head on, rather than at some oblique angle or through some filter. Audience applause was held to a bare minimum--I don't know if they turned down the sound or whether the audience was instructed to be quiet. And rather than showing a combination of stills and motion footage, color and black and white--for the first time that I can recall they had an artist render a portrait of each person in a similar style (probably by putting some Photoshop effects on a photograph, but tasteful nonetheless). And each person, known or not, was identified by craft. Quite nice.

The only "Goldsmith gripe" pertains to the Academy's continued failure to incorporate Jerry's great fanfare into the proceedings. It has iconic potential, but, as usual, the Academy doesn't know its ass from a hole in the ground.

I get really cross when no major film composers have the grace to die in any particular year big grin

I tried to watch the highlights show on Sky1 last night, but I think my tolerance level for luvvy/fake/false/ego/did I say false? BS finally hit rock bottom.
Watching all the feigned emotion made me wanna gag.
I barely lasted 5 minutes (it was actually my other half who asked me to switch channels, before she puked).
I guess that's me and the Oscars done for good.

The Oscars this year were standing in the shadow of Morricone imo. But then, I'm not an enthusiast of people congratulating themselves over and over...

They should have a retroactive Oscar for Days of Heaven, the Mission...

What annoyed me was the endless political baiting.

I want the Oscars to get back to a good, oldfashioned celebration.

Also, since when did acceptance speeches become so extensive? Must everyone thank everyone, including the catering boy, in their speeches? I love 'hippie' Williams' more lean thank you note in the 72 Oscars:

All of his five wins are like that. He would have won the Jetski, for sure!

Other than that, a pretty decent show. Loved the surprise visit to the next-door cinema.

From dragon at the NFSD...
"ACADEMY AWARDS---the 90th Academy Awards drew a dismal all-time low of 26.5 million viewers. The 89th Academy Awards drew 32.9 million which was a nine-year low"
-------------
Not just me then!

No, although I think this is more a factor of very few people having seen any of these films. The combined gross of the Best Picture/Director and Actor and Actress winners is less than $170,000,000 (and I'm guessing that a good percentage of the audience for all three films is shared, meaning most moviegoers were left out.

Oops my bad! I must have missed the last year part.

There's such a montage every year. Several cherished composers in the "in Memoriam" section of the 77th Academy Awards, who all unfortunately died in 2004.

I didn't bother watching any again this year, these viewing numbers don't lie, most films of today don't mean diddley, I haven't seen Shape of Water but I soon will on tv, it might be ok as the direction looks different from other copycat films.

I predict Morricone will take over again once he collaborates with...well, geez at this point in his life I'd almost bet anyone would do. He's still peaking at 89...incredible.

It's all for the bookies now. They want safe Oscars. They NEED safe Oscars. And they need all the other awards shows before it to justify that safety.
